So it seems that Theis and Javonte are going to Chicago for Wagner and Kornet.  This creates almost no tax savings -- the Celtics have to be getting some kind of draft compensation from Chicago for this deal to make sense, right?

Extra roster spots to sign LaMarcus Aldridge perhaps?

Wagner and Kornet (if Kornet isn't waived), are emergency 3rd and 4th string centers.  Wagner will be used for hard fouls.

We have opened up one or potentially 2 spots for a buyout candidate, who I hope is Otto Porter.

I am surprised we didn't get a second rounder for Teague based upon his performance over the last 2 games.  Milwaukee was looking for a backup point guard.

Sounds like he might be headed to MIA

Could be more going on here.

Source says that Daniel Theis, Jeff Teague and Javonte Green are all headed out, possibly with third team involved between Celtics and Bulls.

I don't get this. Isn't the deadline up?

Not yet. Takes time for deals to get reported even if they're made by the deadline. Same with free agency.

Jeff Teague will go to Orlando will be bought out by the Magic per a source.

Why the F did they trade Teague when he was just starting to play well and was the best 3pt shooter on the team.... Grant Williams, Edwards, or Green wouldn’t work???

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

Have to say I'm disappointed that G Williams remains on the roster.

Wizards get D. Gafford, C. Hutchinson
Celtics get L. Kornet, M. Wagner
Bulls get D. Theis, J. Green, T. Brown Jr. , $1.3m (from BOS) $250k (from WAS)
I'm relatively high on Wagner, but I think we sold low on Theis.

Imo, Theis for Wagner + a second rounder would have been a fairer deal. Alternatively, Theis for Wagner + Troy Brown Jr.

Would we have been better off keeping Theis, and sign-and-trading him in the off-season?  We could have signed Wagner presumably with a part of the MLE.

The deal only makes sense in my mind if the Celtics like Wagner enough to give him real rotation minutes, and think he could play next to Time Lord or Thompson better than Theis could.  I question that assessment, but otherwise, why not just ship Green to any team in the NBA with $1.3 million and keep Theis?  That alone would have gotten them under the tax.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
So I'm confused, we traded $5M Daniel Theis for $2.25M Luke Kornet and $2.2M Moritz Wagner. That is $5M for $4.45M.

With Teague going to Orlando in the Fournier deal, couldn't we have just found a landing spot for Javonte with the cash that we send out? And if we waive Kornet to open up a roster spot, are we still going to be under the tax if we sign a buy-out player?

How is there not even a 2nd rounder coming back to us? We get two useless players for one productive one and they basically make the same money. This deal sucks.

I guess it's all about avoiding the tax. At the end of the day, we aren't legit contenders regardless.

Imo, we could/should have gotten a better deal for Theis.

Cue the inevitable injury to Rob Williams and suddenly we are playing a center rotation of Tristan Thompson & Mo Wagner.

Great! Love that! Be like the Washington Wizards. Awesome.

Yeah I don't get it at all with Theis.  Trading our best center for a not-great center because you aren't going to be able to resign him?

All these small moves don't add up to any understandable approach to me.  What was our goal at the trade deadline?  It feels like we are taking a step back a bit.  If we are going to do that, then go full in with becoming a seller and ship off some of the other riff raff from our roster as well.
