Just for a day.

But he's ending up 3-6 and 2-3 from 3. So.....

We could have really used his 3 point shooting this season off the  bench.  Could have won several more games IMO. Avoided the play in.  Will never know.

Becoming increasingly skeptical of Ainge's draft acumen.  I agree with Gary Washburn, he needs new blood in the management team/scouting department.  But not Paul Pierce, I think he would not be a good choice.  Too bad we couldn't snare someone like  Mike Schmidt from ESPN, I really like his scouting of players.

Bane has an all-around game. The two knocks on him were age and short arms. Age doesn't matter as much when picking a role player and arm length is no way to judge talent.

Agreed....but GMs do unless one is Steph Curry

All the advance metrics point towards longer arms....even higher on the list than height

So you're ready to dump Ainge's team because they didn't draft a guy like Desmond Bane?

Shooting is more important than arm length. 42% from 3 as a rookie.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
Bane's nice, but there are a lot of nice players from this draft and Ainge seemingly drafted 2 of them. There was just no way we were going to draft 3 rookies after keeping all 5 rookies from last year on the roster. Even our 2nd round pick was a super-predictable draft-and-stash. I said it before, but there is no guarantee we would have even drafted Bane - he was just the player we selected to trade to MEM.

Hopefully Nesmith and Pritchard can continue to show they really belong and even separate themselves from some of their peers.

When you look at our draft class, what pick makes you skeptical?

Nesmith and Pritchard look like players, and Mader is a lottery ticket that may or may pay off.

In terms of prospects, Bane and Pritchard are on the same level, Nesmith is better.

Matisse Thybulle and Brandon Clarke says hello as other recent draft boo boos

Ainge is not infallible, this stuff is a gamble, the 2019 draft is a big part of why we slipped into mediocrity

Clarke was a lot worse this year then he was as a rookie.  Not super surprising either since he was an older player and those guys generally enter the league more prepared, but then when teams focus a bit more on them, they falter and can't handle the increased attention and don't have nearly as much room to grow (I expect Bane, Pritchard, and Tillman to all see that as well).  He is better than Grant Williams, but no where near enough to make much of a difference at all.  Thybulle is a fine defensive prospect, but does virtually nothing else and like Clarke actually got worse statistically in his 2nd year.  Everyone else drafted at 14 or later isn't any better than what we have.  I just don't think you are in reality land when you say the 2019 draft is why we slipped into mediocrity.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

He is still better in terms of production than Grant or Romeo and yes, he has had a worse year than last.    But I think these stats could have made a difference as it is decent bench production.

PPG    RPG  AST    FG          3P       FT        STL    BLOCK    PER
10.3   5.6    1.6   51..7%   26%    69%      1       0.9        17.3

In 24 MPG

Grant in 18 MPG gave us    4.7 PPG and 2.8 RPG  on 43% from the field, thought he is markedly better three point shooter.

https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/w/willigr01.html

Also if you look at their PER 36 there is a vast difference.   Grant is barely up to Brandon's in  PER 36  rebounds per game and ppg and he would have 5+ fouls to Clarke's  2

We have Carsen Edwards, Grant Williams, Romeo Langford and Tacko Fall and Tremont Waters from 2019   of those what four of them were drafted.    Have they helped us much this year?   Much of our under producing bench is from this time period.    Out of these guys only Romeo should be on the team next year and he is largely a defensive specialist.

As for opinion based in reality, I am posting actual stats to base my argument not just opinion with all due respect.  Sorry, but Clarke is way better than Grant or Romeo at this point and will likely most always be better than Grant.

I never said Clarke wasn't better than Williams, in fact I said he was.  What I said was he wouldn't do much to change the outlook of this team.  He is a bench player, and not even a very good one comparatively speaking.  Maybe he yields 1 extra win (2 in some weird strange circumstances) as opposed to Grant, which is like nothing.  And Williams can actually spread the floor hitting the 3 at 37.2%, which is actually the most useful thing either of them does.  Because while Clarke is better at most things, he certainly isn't even very good at anything.  He doesn't pass or rebound well.  He doesn't spread the floor.  He doesn't draw fouls often or hit FT's at a great percentage.  At least Grant is a plus shooter from deep.  That actually has real value situationally.

I think Clarke being a better bench player would have helped us.   It means starters can take a breather.   Think of how many games we lost this year because of the bench.   Is he a world beater nope.   But would he have helped us, I think the extra 5 ppg could win you some close games.   He also is a better defender with a better defensive rating 113 for Grant and 109 for Clarke.   Those little margins would have not helped us in a blowout but a close game certainly.

I count 13 games we lost by less than 5 points so it could have made a difference possibly.

He can shoot but he can rarely get it off unless wide open.   I can't believe that people are actually defending 4 points a game in 18 minutes which is quite frankly terrible.   No one respects Williams it is not like he spreads the floor heck his team mates don't even like to pass to him.

It does have  value situationally that can't be argued .  But you're literally getting next to nothing most of the time and he shoots 43% from the floor otherwise.

My point is you could get a much better veteran  3 D guy who could better use those minutes and the 2019 draft thus far appears to be a bad one for us and our roster save Romeo and he still could break bad, I hope not.
