Noooo ... he was the last link to the old days of the NBA.

All the old timer commentators are gone now.

Argh!

All these corporate approved commentators that all sound the same are everywhere now.

Yes he was one of a kind, our Tommy.

Quote
To a later generation of fans, he was known as a voluble television analyst, his passion, exuberance, and candor making him both a colorful and controversial personality.

“One thing I learned a long time ago is that there’s no control over what people think of you,” said Mr. Heinsohn, who once appeared in a famous Miller Lite commercial showing NBA referee Mendy Rudolph thumbing him out of a bar. “Some people said of me, ‘Hey, it’s great to see somebody with enthusiasm’. Others said I was a screaming ass.

"And all I can say is, ‘That’s me, pal.’ I’m involved, and when I’m involved, I let it all hang out. I don’t worry about my image.”

In a statement, the Celtics said, "For all of his accomplishments as a player, coach, and broadcaster, it is Tommy’s rich personality that defined the man. A loving father, grandfather, and husband. A talented painter and a lively golf partner. Unofficial mentor to decades of Celtics coaches and players. A frequent constructive critic of referees. Originator of the most ‘Celtic stat’ of them all, The Tommy Point. And a boundless love for all things Boston Celtics, a passion which he shared with fans over 64 years.

“As long as there are the Boston Celtics, Tommy’s spirit will remain alive.”

Who will tell us we got the next Russell in the draft this year? Who will tell us how bad the refs are and how good the new batch of rookies is going to be. No one was ever more excited about the Celtics than Tommy.

Such a great loss. Tommy was a true Celtics legend as a player, coach commentator and mentor who gave his life to the organization and the fans, and the city of Boston. We love you and miss you Tommy, RIP.

I'm so sad I can't hardly stand it.  Tommy was there for me since I started rooting for the C's in the late '60's.  I've always been an out of stater and started getting the home games in the '80's on the big dish, then DirecTV and now League Pass.  In recent years I've missed him so due to his health.  The national games always sucked because I couldn't listen to Mike and Tommy.  And Cous, too, although some years back.  I know Scal has been groomed to take over and he's fine.  But....he's not Tommy.  There will never be another Tommy.  Every game with him was always a special treat for me.  This really hurts.  Bad.  I remember my one and only trip to the garden during Bird's last season.  I walked on the parquet and was within 3 feet of Tommy and Cous before the game.  I'll remember that as much as the game.  One of Larry/Kevin/Chief's last games, in '92 I think.  No, he didn't have a cigarette at the time.

Does anyone know his last game that he called?  I'd like to re-watch it and reminisce.

Who could forget these kind of rants from Tommy...he had our team's back all the way. We loved him because he said EXACTLY what we were all thinking, in our living rooms.

Another great Tommy moment "how could you call a foul on the great LeBron" (sarcastic of course)

NO!

This is so sad. I loved listening to Tommy—loved his homerism, loved hearing him cheer on the good guys, loved hearing him complain about the officials. To the inventor of the Tommy Point—rest in peace.

Hilarious. Only KG would get tossed from a preseason game, and only Tommy would get so riled watching a preseason game, LOL.

I feel like I've been run over by a truck.

I mean, sure, we all knew it was coming eventually.  But man ... the void suddenly.

Tommy has been such a giant, magnificent presence in Celtic NBA history for 6 decades.  He's been a part of everything.  Jesus.   Eight titles as a player.  Two more as a coach.  And then, with Mike, covering the Bird titles and the 2008 title.  And all the games in between and since.

And above all that - he was just plain a wonderful person.

I'm literally crying.   This sucks.   It just sucks.

Rest in peace, Tommy.  We loved you.  We're gonna miss you.

NBA Officiating - Corrupt?  Incompetent?  Which is worse?  Does it matter?  It sucks.
