So glad to have been able to spend time listening to him. I learned a lot. He was one of a few people who really see the game and can explain it to you.
People say he was a homer, which has some truth to it; but I prefer to think that he never stopped being a coach.
He was a lucky man, blessed with the great fortune to have one extraordinary man after another to work with. But that was more than just chance, more than the ordinary randomness that so much of life seems to be - he was a great teammate whom great men wanted on their team.
He was all about the team.
And he was joyous. And he was funny. All of Australia? Get out of here!
So many things have changed forever this year, so many good things - and good people - are gone. I won’t say that this year is the appropriate one to lose beloved Tom Heinsohn, for no year would be.
But maybe we can raise our memory of him as a banner in this tragic, disrupted, agonized year; maybe it can give us courage, remembering his optimism, his excellence, his lion heart, his eagle eye, his love.
Bye Tommy.
