Nice video of Bill Simmons talking with his dad about Tommy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xOdBGf6II8

Never knew that Tommy was the head of the players union in the 60s. At the time, the NBA hadn't recognised the union yet. Tommy rallied the players behind him and demanded health care for all NBA players, alongside other basic rights. The players run a strike during the 1964 All-Star game in Boston. Half an hour before the game they told the owners they would boycott the All-Star game. The NBA grudgingly agreed to recognise the union and accepted their demands. Imo, this far exceeds his contributions as a player/coach/commentator. All NBA players from the mid 60s onwards owe big time to Tommy!

Tommy Heinsohn lived life to the fullest. No matter the way you look at it, he's a true basketball legend!

Yeah his union work doesn't get a lot of printspace usually. He was also a committed artist, a tremendous reader, and a whole lot more than just a man with an allergy to referees. Greatest homer of all time is an honor, to me: he roots for the team the way I wish everyone would root for the team: entirely subjective and entirely full of passion.

I can't actually get into this article because of GDPR, but there's a great photo of him at his easel with a breakwater in the background here (thanks google images):

Is it possible that Tommy could also be inducted into the basketball hall of fame as a broadcaster?

I've asked this before but no one seems to remember, but I'll try again.

Years ago when you could watch C's games on regular tv(channel 38 here in RI) during the reggie lewis yrs. Tommy was talking about an incident that happened in Philly when he was a coach. I don't remember the altercation but tommy had said he got into a heated argument with one of the refs... No surprise here, but supposedly according to tommy this was where the C's/tommy vs refs started. Tommy said the argument ended when the ref said to him "I'll make sure your team never gets another call in this league ever again".

If anyone remembers this story let me know, I forget what the altercation was that led to that and I've been racking my brain ever since.

It's sending some sparks in my cranium but I can't recall any specifics, sorry GreenWarrior.

I did find this nice anecdote, though:

I love that Scal got to work with Tommy.  Obviously their Celtics pedigrees are worlds apart, but I think Scal gets the right balance of bleeding green and analysis.

My biggest qualm with Scal is that he tends to ramble at times.  Talks too much. I think he likes to hear himself talk.

Some of the most entertaining stuff Scal did last year was with Kendrick Perkins when he lead Perk into storytelling and kept quiet for the most part. When Scal interjected, it was pertinent and comical.

But other than that, yeah, Scal tends to ramble. As long as he keeps the Tommy Point alive, he's good by me though.

I will say, Scal has been an extremely large upgrade from Donnie "When Ray & I played at UConn" Marshall.

That was a low bar.

I’m a big fan. Great vision, great communication. He’s already one of the league’s best, imo.
'I was proud of Marcus Smart. He did a great job of keeping us together. He might not get credit for this game, but the pace that he played at, and his playcalling, some of the plays that he called were great. We obviously have to rely on him, so I’m definitely looking forward to Marcus leading this team in that role.' - Jaylen Brown, January 2021

He is also a giant step above Cedric Maxwell, who a lot of people were pushing to be Tommy's successor.

Cedric! UGH!!! Thank God! No quack quacks!

RIP, Tommy.  I grew up listening to you, as a hardcore basketball fan, and your personality/craziness even brought me together with my fractured family.

Anecdote, I have an older brother with serious mental health issues, and while I haven't lived near "home" for nearly 2 decades, and he isn't the biggest basketball fan, he texted me for the first time today in around 1 year to express his sadness at your passing.  You had a tremendous influence on many of our lives, and you will be missed! Thank you!
