I think Ainge knows how this is going to go. I fully expect Plan B to become the plan. Keep the young guys, Horford and Hayward. Maybe trade a pick for a PG....keep the other 2 picks.

I got the sense that Kyrie really is not going to be a Celtic. And if that is so, do not waste picks or player on a rental in Davis.

As for Rozier....I think he is a selfish me first guy that has overvalued himself. Would rejoice if he was shown the door. BUT...I could see Ainge resigning him and him being the PG...

Would love to get Mike Conley. He is a system guy, plays team ball. Would be a real leader on this team. And he isn't Terry Rozier

How would we match salary for a Conley trade?

Wouldn't the only way be to include Hayward? Would Memphis bite on a deal for Hayward, Memphis pick and #22?  Obviously, the Memphis pick is a little more valuable to Memphis than to anyone else given they could tank for 2 seasons, be looking at 2 top-4 picks to add to their #2 (Morant) this year.  Then shed Hayward's salary in 2 years creating huge cap space. or unload him at the deadline in 2020-21.

That's about the only logical way to get there without completely gutting the roster. But logic is never a requirement around here.

I am not saying it can or will happen. I am just looking at someone that might really fit the Celtics system as well as provide some real leadership while keeping them competitive.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
I like Conley and he would be a welcome addition to our team, but I wouldn't be willing to trade Hayward OR the MEM pick for him, never mind both.

I do agree that if Kyrie walks and Danny still wants AD that other dominoes will have to fall, but I just don't know that Conley is an improvement over a healthy (younger) Hayward, and that MEM pick would be huge in a trade (hopefully Danny can keep that asset in an AD trade).

Thank you for some better logic....TP!

Yeah, the question was "how?" rather than "would you?".   I am likely in agreement that I wouldn't do the trade, just offering an idea for salary match and somethign Memphis might take.  There's no benefit to the Griz to just swap Conley for Hayward. But yeah, I don't think the C's are better off UNLESS this trade opens the door again for AD.

EDIT: Nix. Sending the Memphis pick to Memphis probably means Tatum AND Brown for AD... so no.

I can see where the Celtics might benefit from a year or two of a veteran point guard like Conley, but the price is way too high. They don't need a 30M per year point guard, and the cost of the trade itself doesn't make sense. Same for Chris Paul. No thanks.

If Kyrie walks, sign a vet point guard and either draft or trade for a young point guard to develop.

Irving or no Irving it’s time for Ainge to #### or get off the pot regarding a big splash.

Jordan was the greatest of all time and was an NBA All-star his second season. After watching Brown and Tatum last few years, I don’t see any Jordan esq talent.

Ainge missed the boat with Leonard. If it’s another swing and miss for Davis, Irving or no Irving it equals Purgatory and Ainge has been stroking us fans since Garnett left!

Make the trade regardless of contracts if the trade can be made for Davis. See Toronto

Curry didn't become an All-Star until his 5th year, Kawhi didn't become an all-star until his 5th year, Chauncey Billups didn't become an All-star until his 9th year.

Zach Randolph, Paul Milsap, Tyson Chandler and Kyle Lowry weren't exactly All-stars in their first 4 years. Patience is virtue or you'll regret it like we already did in Joe Johnson and Chauncey Billups cases.

Celtics don't need "Jordan" talent. They need great chemistry and right fit of talent that could push them deep in the playoffs.

It sounds like Ainge fully expects Kyrie to leave. He praised Brown and Hayward for handling their situation well. Then he said not everyone bought in what Stevens and Ainge plan was.
I assume the ones who didn’t buy in were Rozier and Kyrie. Because Rozier was relegated back to the bench Ainge kind of see where terry’s complaints stem from..
He is also renegotiating with Horford.
His plan now is probably to give a decent 3 year deal to Horford- maybe $70 M total.
Match any offer to Rozier up to a point else let him walk.
We would need to use the MLE and BAE wisely if we want to improve...

I think that Morris and Jayson would be in the boat with Kyrie and Rozier in that regard, although I suspect that the latter were more of an issue.

Personally, I suspect Jaylen was also an issue early on, but the 2nd half of the season he seemed to buy in.

I don't see any Jordanesque talent anywhere in the league.

Your premise is foolish. A lot of guys emerge as all stars well after their 2nd year. J&J are on a better track than many of the league's current stars.

Losing Kyrie and then losing AD after one year would leave us at the bottom of the league, totally bereft of any assets. That would be the most foolish move Ainge could possibly make.

It's interesting that Danny singled out Gordon and Jaylen as the two players who accepted their roles. We already know that Terry was one of the people unhappy and struggled all year with accepting his role. So who else is there really? Kyrie's role didn't really change, neither did Al's. Tatum, Smart and Mook's roles actually increased to an extent. Baynes was injured much of the year, Theis was never getting a lot of minutes anyway. Semi's probably the one players whose minutes dropped the most from last year but I can't see him complaining.

So does this mean that Terry's the cancer in the locker room? Or were JT and Mook unhappy despite playing bigger roles, they wanted even bigger ones? Or did Kyrie reject his role as leader?

Quote
“It didn’t really ever take where we had 100 percent buy-in from 100 percent of our players,” Ainge admitted. “I did not anticipate that.”

That lack of buy-in can be blamed on everyone, Ainge and Stevens included. They, like many people on the outside looking in, expected guys to eventually settle into their necessary roles.

“At some point you fight, compete and then however it works out you accept your role and you move on and you keep going,” Ainge said, singling out Gordon Hayward and Jaylen Brown for being two of the few who could. “I wish our team would have done a better job with that this year.”

https://www.masslive.com/celtics/2019/06/boston-celtics-could-bring-back-terry-rozier-in-the-right-role-according-to-danny-ainge.html

I haven’t watched the full interview but this is pretty interesting. If I had to guess, I’d say...
 - Jayson Tatum probably wanted an even bigger role. He didn’t want to be Kobe playing with Shaq. He wanted to be Kobe playing with Gasol/Odom.
 - Mook probably wanted a bigger role, got it, and then didn’t want to step down when his play didn’t merit it anymore. Not as bad definitely as like a TR (or a JT) but maybe that’s why DA was saying not everyone 100#
 - Kyrie probably wanted to do things a certain way (probably like how he played in the Bucks series) and he didn’t super buy-in deferring more and more to the other young guys. Again, not as bad as TR but probably some real resistance there

Technically nobody else got significant minutes, really. I can’t imagine Horford complaining too and I think Smart played the best he’s ever played this year.

Build around  Hayward Tatum Brown Smart Rozier....and If Horford wants to stay for the ride, its all good

I believe in this potential unit

Celts bench is also kind of empty at the moment, but Danny can pickup 3 good role players through the draft

how anyone could watch that and not get danny thought kyrie is as good as gone is bizarre, if not completely   delusional.    he appeared resigned to the impeding departure .

Lol. Poster with obvious confirmation bias calls others completely delusional. Now that is funny.

This whole thread is just people becoming further entrenched in whatever position they had prior to seeing DA say this.
