Yeah I just don't agree with that mindset.
I suppose I enjoy watching basketball more than I enjoy the idea of my team hoisting a trophy.
Which seems awfully strange to me since you are notoriously pessimistic when it comes to the Celtics and Patriots, basically writing them off early. You really don't seem like the " I just like watching fun basketball(sports)" type person given all your complaining about those teams. I would have thought you were a title or bust type of guy given your posting.
I guess I want my teams to be building towards something but I also want to be able to enjoy actually watching them.
The Patriots this season were not much fun to watch until they got to the playoffs.
Obviously watching them win the super bowl again was awesome and I am really thankful to have that experience.
My pessimism is more about managing my own emotional response to the team's fortunes.
It just seems to me that it's really hard to win a title in a league where the title usually is only within the grasp of the teams that have one or more of a handful of players. So if you really think that there's no point to any of this unless you're winning a title, you're gonna be left feeling totally unsatisfied the vast majority of the time.
What I want is a well run team that plays good basketball and is always looking for ways to improve. My hope would be that every once in a while that results in some good fortune that puts the team in a position to win a championship.
The title or bust mentality, taken to a logical extreme, would mean that team is always either tanking for top picks / angling for a major trade or is in full on contention mode. Never any in between.
I guess I'm responding to the fact that Celts don't seem likely to be a serious contender in the near future by trying to appreciate the journey.
