Gritty win by Portland.

Unfortunately, that's as far as they'll go. Golden State will sweep them.

Heckuva lot better than getting swept by the Pelicans last year

I love both of those teams. They're everything the Celts weren't this year.

I hated to see either of them lose.

Denver will be back.

Great to see old friend Evan Turner making big plays in the fourth.

You know, neither Denver nor portland had any real hope of winning the title entering these playoffs.

I bet their fans are pretty glad they got to watch their teams in these last two series. Lots of fun exciting tough playoff basketball. Gritty, gutsy performances.

I doubt there are any Portland fans wishing they'd missed the playoffs so they had a better chance at a top pick since they're not gonna beat the warriors anyway.

This is what I'm talking about when I say that building up a young team and focusing on developing team culture, playing the right way, etc, can be about other things than simply "title or bust."

Watching that game this afternoon I couldn't help thinking about how much I enjoyed the run the Celts went on in the playoffs last year and how much of a bummer it is that they didn't give us much at all to be excited about this April/may.

Didn’t see final box score until now

Lillard shot 3-17
Murray shot 4-18

Well, if things go sideways, and there is no Kyrie, no Davis and possibly no Horford, I hope you enjoy your fun team.

I grew up being taught the Celtics are about titles and getting titles was fun. I lived through most of my 20's and all of my 30's, 40's and now my 50's with just 1 Celtics title. That's 33 years, almost all of my sports loving adulthood gone with with just 1 championship. Most of those years absolutely sucked.

It's been 11 years since the last title and if Kyrie and Davis don't materialize to get us a realistic shot at a title, I am really not going to look forward to another decade or more without a chance because that could be very possible.

I don't have time to watch "fun" teams in the NBA purgatory of being squarely in the middle of the pack. I want title 18 sometime before I die.

THIS IS BOSTON. IT'S TITLE OR NOTHING.

SF: Brandon Roy (08-09) / Walter Davis (78-79)
PF: Terry Cummings (84-85) / Paul Millsap (15-16)
C: Chris Webber (00-01) / Ralph Sampson (83-84) / Andrew Bogut (09-10)

Yeah I just don't agree with that mindset.

I suppose I enjoy watching basketball more than I enjoy the idea of my team hoisting a trophy.

The Celts have been a talented and well managed team for most of the last 11 years, and have only won title to show for it.

So every season other than 08 was a total waste? They count for nothing? No positive memories or experiences?  Nothing to look back on fondly?

Which seems awfully strange to me since you are notoriously pessimistic when it comes to the Celtics and Patriots, basically writing them off early. You really don't seem like the " I just like watching fun basketball(sports)" type person given all your complaining about those teams. I would have thought you were a title or bust type of guy given your posting.

I guess I want my teams to be building towards something but I also want to be able to enjoy actually watching them.

The Patriots this season were not much fun to watch until they got to the playoffs.

Obviously watching them win the super bowl again was awesome and I am really thankful to have that experience.

My pessimism is more about managing my own emotional response to the team's fortunes.

It just seems to me that it's really hard to win a title in a league where the title usually is only within the grasp of the teams that have one or more of a handful of players.  So if you really think that there's no point to any of this unless you're winning a title, you're gonna be left feeling totally unsatisfied the vast majority of the time.

What I want is a well run team that plays good basketball and is always looking for ways to improve.  My hope would be that every once in a while that results in some good fortune that puts the team in a position to win a championship.

The title or bust mentality, taken to a logical extreme, would mean that team is always either tanking for top picks / angling for a major trade or is in full on contention mode.  Never any in between.

I guess I'm responding to the fact that Celts don't seem likely to be a serious contender in the near future by trying to appreciate the journey.

Embiid playing a lot of minutes early on.  Keep it up and he wont have any gas left in the tank in the 4th.

TP Pho. You're a really good guy and tremendous poster. That's a tremendous response. I understand it, but that's just not me. My guess is if you go another 20 years without a Celtic title, you might start to become the grumpy old man I am just wishing and hoping for that title or bust.

Decided that answer was so good a gave you a few extra TPs.
