It's not so much his ball handling skills that are bad. It's actually pretty good. It's how he uses his handle and moves that seem contrived. He doesn't have that instinctual ability to take advantage when his man off balance and out of position. Every move seems to be predetermined.
When u look at Fultz play, his moves are efficient and have purpose. His control and pace are what make him special. Jaylen is a long way from having that "feel"!
100% right. Jaylen will make a move, and sometimes a really good move, and his defender gets off balance or out of position and Jaylen should strike, either with a wide-open jumper or a drive to the basket. But instead he puts on two more moves in the same spot and allows his defender to gather himself. And then the shot clock gets under seven seconds and no one else is open or coming to set a pick so he jacks up a shot off the side of the backboard.
For everyone saying "the SL is a place to experiment" and "it doesn't matter" and "they're seeing what he can do" there are a lot of other players out there who aren't committing stupid turnovers. Letting a defender easily run up behind you and poke the ball away when there are two minutes left in a close game? This kid has very little court awareness.
Yes, I agree he won't try to "do too much" once the season starts, but the fact that he's this bad at playing smart basketball in Summer League (despite the supposed lack of spacing) is just troubling.
Count me as someone who doesn't care for Summer League Jaylen. I much prefer Regular Season Jaylen.
