  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
This all hinges on whether or not you think that the current Celtics plus Lebron (and maybe a few low-salary vets) would be enough to beat the current Warriors. I think I'd take that tisk, but I can definitely understand why some people wouldn't

I was coming here to say the same thing so TP. Is the rest of our roster better than the Cavs roster without Lebron? I honestly don't know.

GS seems so far ahead of everybody else, including the Cavs, that it isn't just an obvious 'yes'. Would it be easier to win a ring with Lebron on our team against a currently stacked GS team or easier with a Cs team that isn't quite as good, but is going against regular (not transcendent) top end talent? A team of that caliber will likely never be able to be assembled again because of last year's salary jump.

Only one team can win the championship. It would be fun to be actual contenders, but I don't really want to be solidly 2nd for three years in a row and then start over from scratch.

EDIT: I did not answer, but only because I am a totally indecisive person.

umm yeah. Lebron is one of those guys that you go all in on, regardless of his age. you could sign Lebron and 10 guys for the vet minimum and still get to the Finals.
The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing.

I would much rather see the rising of new stars than the crashing of old stars, even if it meant another banner in Boston.

We stand the real posssibility of developing a dynasty for many years to come, with Fultz and Brown and the 18 Brooklyn pick possibly being in the Top 3.
It has been fun to watch the team develop over the past three years to the point where I truly believe our current configuration could beat both Cleveland and Golden State with the right bounce.  While I agree that on paper those two teams are better than the Celtics...sometimes it's more important what happens on the hardwood when the odds seem against you.

Thomas and the Celtics showed that kind of heart in the playoffs, especially coming back from a two game deficit after he lost his sister...and a tooth, while playing with a bad hip!  It showed their true character, at least to me.

Sometimes being the champion means you are the "best"...but sometimes you learn more about people when they don't win.  These Celtics entertained us this year and gave us some memorable moments that won't soon be forgotten.  I would not trade that for a shot at short lived success for nothing.

Love Jaylen, but if anyone says 'no' to this, they need to be banned from this site  :P
I think a lot more people will say no to this than you might expect

Yeah but I mean, if it almost guarantees you like 2 titles (which it should), why not?

Isn't that the goal. Championships? Plus I'm sure "ring-chasers" come over which helps a ton.

I remember one of the CBers I was closest with quit the blog because he was upset that the team traded Big Al and Delonte for KG and BigAl. He was a big believer in the youth movement, and probably would have prescribed to the quite articulate "rising stars, not falling stars" mantra.

I sometimes wonder what he thinks now. (Miss you, aqua).

I know it would never happen but would you trade trade for Lebron adding him to this current team and a chance at 2-3 rings or would you pass and wait to see if the picks develop over time for a chance at multiple titles later?

For me. Give me Lebron.

I said no, but only because he is 32.  He can't possibly play at this level into his mid 30s.

pierce and KG were done in mid 30's in 2012/2013 as we so fondly remember.  Even if he can play at that level what does he have left? 3 years at a high level? then there is that team in oakland. no guarantees.

Plus you get many players that used to be really good that want to come play for your team for the bare minimum.

We were a bottom feeding team before KG Ray Allen trades. Much different scene here today. Reasonable to expect a shot of building championship caliber team in a few years particularly given the giving tree aka Brooklyn picks. I like the path we're on.

Competing against a team with Curry, Klay, Draymond and Durant... no guarantees. At all.

Me too.

Never adhered to the "if you can't beat 'em, join'em" mindset.

It's extremely distasteful to me.

I want us to beat his ass....not have him join us.
