Not during the pingpong ball lottery era.
We did have number 1 pick in the 80s where it was swapped with Parish and the number 3 pick forming the first big 3 era.

Well I am of the conspiracy minority on this board.  When LeBron left Cleveland, I think he had a deal with the league office that if Cleveland landed some top picks and had a team or assets to build around that he would go back to Cleveland.  He just did not want to stay in Cleveland for the rebuild.  So going to Miami and letting Cleveland tank and get assets was the plan.

After Lebron left they won the lottery in 2011 with a 2.8% chance of getting the 1st pick and it ended up being Kyrie.

In 2013 Cleveland won the #1 pick again with a 15.6% chance of getting the 1st pick, but got unlucky by drafting Bennett.

In 2014 Cleveland won the #1 pick again with a 1.7% chance of getting the 1st pick, and ended up with Wiggins and then traded him for Love (Veteran).

Then LeBron came back.  So in the 4 years LeBron was in Miami, Cleveland won the 1st pick 3 out of 4 years.  That is unprecedented in the NBA lottery to win that frequently.

So now that I have established a league conspiracy of fixing the lottery, I think the Celtics will get the #1 pick and LA the #2 pick.  This will set up a media frenzy with the talk shows stating that Ball is the best player but does not want to play for Boston, yada yada yada.  Boston will pick Fultz and LA will take Ball.  This will give the league the Celtic, Laker rivalry a shot in the arm.

I can also see Boston getting the #2 pick and LA with the #3 pick, again setting up a media storm when Boston passes on Ball and LA takes Ball.

I just don't see the league giving Philly two top 10 picks and rewarding them again with all of the tanking they have been doing over the years.

Well I will be watching the Lottery tonight and hope we end up with the #1 pick, but I agree with Danny that this draft is top heavy and that we can still get a good player in the top 4 picks.

Well the ping pong balls belonged to the Nets so any previous bad luck with Celtics ping pong balls has no effect on this outcome :)

That was I was banking on really because our own luck with the pingpong balls have all been nightmare scenarios.

It's pretty amazing that the Celts have only had the #1 pick once, and that we've never actually made the #1 pick.  Meanwhile the Cavs have picked 1st three times in the last 15 years.  Looking at just the lottery era, the Clippers have won it a whopping four times, the come the Magic, the Sixers, and the Cavs with three.  Hell, the Spurs have won it twice as well.

One would think that lady luck would eventually shine on us but I am not counting on it.

Yes, the Cavs had multiple god-awful teams over the last 15 years. The Celtics, not so much.

The Celtics have never picked 1st overall, is that right?

We picked Heinsohn first in 1956 with what was called a "territorial pick," which was a special pick teams could use that replaced their regular pick with the benefit of it coming before the rest of the draft, so we picked first instead of 7th in the first round. The requirement is that the player drafted must haved played college ball within a fifty-mile radius of the arena of the team drafting him, this was done to increase the popularity of home teams by giving them an earlier shot to draft local college stars.

A lot of notable players were picked with territorial picks, including Oscar robertson and Wilt Chamberlain.

in that same 1956 draft Red Auerbach picked Bill Russell two spots after Heinsohn with a pick obtained from the Hawks, and then picked KC Jones in the second round.

Turned out to be a pretty good draft for Red.
 ;)

It was the only time we used a territorial pick, the Philadelphia Warriors used it 7 times, and the Lakers used it 5 times, three times in Minny and twice in LA.

It is probably a good thing they did away with that, considering the high number of good players that play in mega cities. If that system were in place Ball would definitely get his chance to play for the Lakers. Now Silver has to go through the trouble of rigging the draft instead.  :P

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
I don't know if I can watch live. I know it's a 'four player' draft, but I hate losing. I just can't get these images out of my head:

Whatever happens, it couldn't be more heart-wrenching than the Grizzlies 2003 draft.

Back in 1997 the Grizz sent a top-1 protected pick to the Pistons for 35-year-old Otis Thorpe.

Fast-forward to the 2003 lottery, the Grizz just had the 6th-worst record in the league, but as the lottery wears on their draft slot passes and they know they've jumped up to the top three.

If they get the #1 pick, they get to keep it and draft LeBron James.

But instead they got #2, and the pick went to Detroit, who blew it on Darko Milicic.

Jerry West was obviously not too happy in this clip

Don't forget Rose going to his hometown Bulls with a 1.7% chance, or the Pelicans getting Anthony Davis right after an NFL owner bought the team, or Durant going to Seattle right as the team was being seriously considered to be moved to OKC and Stern's buddy.

It's rigged. In order to protect the credibility of future rigged lotteries, however, the NBA will use 2017 as a chance to come up with a sequence that we will believe must be random because there is no sensible reason for rigging it in this order:

1) Charlotte
2) Detroit
3) Minnesota

I'm sticking to my prediction...I hope I'm wrong though.

1-Suns
2-Celtics
3-Lakers

Don't worry the Suns don't need Fultz and would probably take Ball or Jackson.

I live in Phoenix and there's a lot of talk that McD wants Ball to play next to Booker. Bad move IMHO..

I live here in PHX too.    And my buddy played with PHX two years ago and has some ties still... He thinks the same..but only if they can move Knight.

They think the PG position would be packed even still with the rookie playing well lest year.  I can't remember his name...     but he hit that game winner vs us.
