Jabari Parker Tears ACL Again

Harry Giles is hoping for some inspiring answers.

That said, reinjury isn't that common to begin with, and as sports medicine has dramatically advanced in the past 20 years, the sample size won't be that large one way or the other, I'd think.

Agreed on the sample size.

In the lack of better evidence, I'd rather see the glass half full, and hope that if the surgery worked once, it might as well work twice.

I think he's probably a Marvin Williams type 4 moving forward.  Hopefully he can stay healthy after he comes back from this.

Always thought of Parker as a Pierce-type who can get to his spots and create without dominant athleticism. Hopefully he can get back to close to 100% and have continued growth. The human body is a funny thing.

My guess is this will keep Giles' draft value depressed. I know every case is different, but a GM can't block this stuff out, especially not far from the next draft.

How does Milwaukee get rid of him right now at .20 on the dollar? He's their highest pick and his stock is plummeting. Wouldn't you wait for his stock to rebound before shipping him off?

I can't see a scenario where Milwaukee values him less than another team. I'm sure they will want a top 10, or even top 5 pick for him. I wouldn't trade either BKN pick for Jabari.

It's hard to feel bad for multimillionaires, but I hate seeing young talented guys get hurt.

This probably reads as retroactive theory-making, but injury histories do seem to be underappreciated when top talents are being considered at draft time. 

Reinjuries may not seem that common, but data may be skewed.  Especially in the case of severe injuries, like ligament tears, where careers may end early or playing time/style may drastically change for the sake of prolonging one's career.

I'm not sure if injuries are under-appreciated.  Maybe by fans you mean?  Most teams give players a thorough look over, and ones with significant injury history tend to fall.  They may not always fall very far, because perhaps a team feels that recurrence is unlikely, or that the talent is worth the risk (as the Bucks have shown, you can draft a perfectly healthy kid who reads his knee twice in 3 years after he's drafted, so the increased risk is marginal in nature, and not binary).  But I do think they're considered.

Most top talents don't have significant injury history anyway -- players that do usually aren't able to display their talent enough to be drafted at the top.

Yeah, I'd say that applies to fans far more than NBA FOs.  Quite a few people seem high on Giles, for example, but I can't help but think he'd be a poor gamble any earlier than mid-first round.  On the flip side, I can see how it'd be really hard to pass on a guy like Embiid with where he landed.  Can't help but think he's still in danger of having a short/limited career, though.

Agreed. This is like Danny holding on to Rondo until he came back and showed he could play again. Of course, with this injury I'm not sure he ever will.

For ACL tears, they usually take grafts from the patellar tendon but since it's a re-injury, they'd likely take a graft from the hamstring. Both of them were skeptical about his long term career and agreed that a tear to the other knee would've actually been a better prognosis. One of them seemed hesitant about his ability to return long term and remarked that he's going to be in a lot of medical journals if he does return and has an impactful career.

It's definitely worth mentioning that old friend Nate Archibald had Achilles tendon tears on both legs. Only his right Achilles required surgery.

Right...like I said it is "rare" that any player returns to normal after a major reconstructive surgery of any kind, particularly and ACL and especially an Achilles.  Jonas has done well to recover but I am sure if you asked him he would call his injury life-changing. 

Any GM would be smart to sell-high on any player post-reconstructive surgery.  It sounds nefarious but on average it is easily the right move.
