MILWAUKEE — The Knicks haven’t given up hope on including the Celtics as a partner in a potential deal for Carmelo Anthony, sending a scout to Saturday’s Celtics-Bucks game.

While Celtics management told the Knicks they aren’t interested in the nine-time All-Star, the Knicks are pushing to move Anthony, according to an NBA source, and they’re intrigued by some of the Celtics’ players.

A source indicated that Knicks president Phil Jackson has instructed management to move Anthony, who has a no-trade clause but included the Celtics as one of the teams for whom he’d waive the clause. Boston could become part of a potential three-team deal that would send Anthony to another club, perhaps the Clippers.

An NBA source said Celtics coach Brad Stevens would embrace coaching Anthony, but president of basketball operations Danny Ainge has rejected any deal. That hasn’t stopped the Knicks from scouting Celtics players just in case Boston is willing to become part of a trade.

Anthony is averaging 22.6 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.0 assists this season for the disappointing Knicks (21-27), who are two games out of the eighth playoff spot in the East. Anthony has faced scrutiny in recent years, and Jackson has been one of Anthony’s biggest critics.

The Celtics present the only realistic trade destination for Anthony, according to Chris Mannix of Yahoo Sports. In a video posted on CSNNE, Mannix says Ainge is in a “great position” to present the Knicks with a lowball offer and dare them to keep Anthony past the February 23rd deadline. Mannix speculates that any deal wouldn’t involve the Nets’ first-rounders that Boston owns for the next two seasons, but may include other Celtics draft picks. He also dismissed recent rumors of a Knicks-Clippers deal, saying it won’t happen unless New York is willing to accept a “garbage package” involving Austin Rivers, Jamal Crawford and others

No Jae. There's no need to give up good players to land Anthony with what the Clippers are able to offer, and you want to save as much as possible for a Jimmy Butler trade. Expirings and non-Brooklyn picks. If they want any of Rozier/Mickey/Jackson/Young/rights to Nader they're welcome to them, but no Smart or Jaylen. Olynyk can be discussed (especially because he potentially gets expensive next year), but if you're including all of Zeller/Amir/Olynyk in a deal you need some frontcourt depth coming back.

Carmelo's a really good fit as a power forward in Steven's system and Brad knows that teams have been able to make life miserable for Isaiah in the playoffs for two years running. Without a second option teams have to gameplan for (and Horford isn't that guy) they're not getting past Toronto, much less Cleveland.

i am soooooooo split on this.

My knee jerk reaction was "No way"... but the more I think about it, the more my interest is piqued. Teams would have to stop covering IT with their SF's like they are starting to do now (not that it's working).

He isn't a perfect fit, but he is a GREAT offensive player, and gives us another option in big games. Isn't it almost worth it to just go get a "star" at a discounted rate, just for the value add? It's kind of what we did with Ray Allen? He wasn't exactly what we needed at the time, but we stole him and it made us a better team, and more of a destination.

I still believe our perfect match is Jimmy Butler, and he makes us a contender, but if that is off the table, is it worth exploring this as almost a lateral move?

I don't love Melo, but I think in this system, he becomes more efficient and having IT and Melo out there together would be pretty dynamic, especially since they both get "star" calls.



If you can get him for the right price, which hopefully means keeping the Nets picks, is it worth it

I think Danny is playing hard to get on this one. If Brad would embrace Carmello in his system, I doubt Ainge would doubt he could implement him. Its just up to him to get him as cheap as possible. Obviously, Ainge probably has reservations about adding him and eating into our max cap space for next year - but there is some doubt of the possibility of adding a max guy next year anyway. Utah will probably keep Hayward, who knows with Blake. Carmello would add more scoring depth, and we could still add a complimentary big while keeping our two coveted firsts. I'm all for it, honestly.

Anthony is a better isolation scorer, but he's a ball stopper and nowhere as efficient. Crowder is improving yearly, while Anthony has been declining. Then, you have to consider the contact and the fact that you would be paying Crowder roughly 1/4 the price of Anthony. And let's not even bring up the D.

If you can do this without giving up any major assets, it might be wise to look at it as Melo vs Gordon Hayward... You sign Melo, you don't have a shot to sign Hayward. So who would you rather have, Melo for 2 1/2 years or Hayward for 6 or 7 at max money?
