I still believe our perfect match is Jimmy Butler, and he makes us a contender, but if that is off the table, is it worth exploring this as almost a lateral move?

I'm a broken record on this, but picking up Carmelo at a discount as a viable starting wing gives you a lot more latitude in giving up guys out of the Avery/Jae/Marcus/Jaylen swingman group in a Jimmy Butler trade. If Carmelo at a steep discount allows you pay sticker price for Butler, you still come out ahead overall.

If you can do this without giving up any major assets, it might be wise to look at it as Melo vs Gordon Hayward... You sign Melo, you don't have a shot to sign Hayward. So who would you rather have, Melo for 2 1/2 years or Hayward for 6 or 7 at max money?

Assuming you can sign Hayward away from an emerging playoff team preparing to offer him a full max contract just because we employ his college coach is a HUGE assumption. Boston will be able to sign somebody, but it's much more likely that it's Serge Ibaka instead of Hayward.

Don't want Melo. I would try to make a 3-way trade with NY and Cleveland.

Love to Boston
Melo to Cleveland
non Brooklyn pick(s) + Amir + (insert players) to NY

Cleveland didn't want Melo for Love a week ago. How has that changed?
I'm just saying that we should give it a try. Hopefully they 'll change their mind. :) Perhaps we throw in a sweetener for them as well.

Melo and Kelly (or Rozier) to Cleveland
Love to Boston

IMO, Melo is better than Crowder but he just isn't that big of an upgrade over Crowder to warrant a trade. Melo's contract suffocates opportunities for future moves and is just not worth it at age 32.

With that being said, it's good to see upper echelon players interested in playing for the C's. From KD to Horford to Melo, it's a real good look.

Most I would do would be Jae and a non brk/Jaylen pick. Plus filler.

... And let's not even bring up the D.

Oh let's...

It's whether he'd be an upgrade over the Amir/Jonas platoon at the "other" starting frontcourt position, not Carmelo vs. Crowder. There's zero need to give up Crowder.

My proposal would be Amir, Zeller, Young and/or Mickey with a couple of 2nd rd picks and maybe a lottery protected future from us down the road. That's about it.

Then we could fill out the rest of our roster with a trade for one of the many rumored bigs, buyouts, and current FA bigmen (Kaman, Nazr, Hansborough, Landry, Gooden, Tavares etc.)

Agree with everything you said here. I'm just saying if you are keeping Cap Space open to chase ghosts it might be a bad idea.

...So what's the price? Smart, KO and our own 1st?

Why would we give up Jae when there are reports out there saying NY would trade him for JJ Reddick (expiring contract) and Austin Rivers

Ah, I see, I read that at as an assumption that Hayward could be signed and an argument that Hayward on a new max deal is better than a couple years of Carmelo (which is true). As far as a price - not necessarily even that. You have to start with Amir and Zeller in order to match salary, but then you really only need to talk about a pretty minor piece like Rozier and the C's own first in 2018, plus maybe either the Clips or Memphis pick in 2019 (I'd really rather not move the Memphis pick, as it's a wildcard). Something like Amir, Zeller, Rozier, Minnesota's second-rounder this year, the C's 2018 pick, and the Clippers lottery-protected first in 2019 that turns into two seconds if it rolls over twice (like the Minnesota first-rounder we used to have) should be more than enough to get a deal done.

No way , his best days are behind him, he moves too slow and jacks too many shots. .  I d rather have Pierce back with the organization .

To pay Pay with any thing but junk players and picks is insane .   Let him go out West and screw up the LA teams mojo .

Melo is about the last player of the Knicks I'd want on this team .  Any of the young guys is good ...not old fussy beat down Melo .....Please NO

That is already a known fact that he will be a Celtic this year maybe after the season to retire.

yeah i know, but it this would be even better, not just an symbolic act. He would be a great locker room guy, a mentor and could actually play sometimes, like the other night with multiple guys out

You can make an argument Crowder is more valuable than Melo now even despite the scoring differences. Yep I said it, and in 2 years when Melo is in his mid 30s and Crowder is in his prime I'd rather have Crowder.

I think if we put a package around Zeller, JJ, Rozier, and non Nets picks is about as far as I would go, especially considering the Clippers potential non big 3 package, and Melo's no trade clause. I wouldn't even include Amir as our interior D is already fragile.  Of course what I'm proposing further means a minutes crunch.  I could see Melo playing lots of 4 for us. Maybe you include Kelly in the package too.

The guy we need is

ANTHONY DAVIS IS THE GUY we should be looking at .....he is the perfect personality and fit for CBS and rest of Celtics.

We are going to,need a serious center to compete with Embiid , Towns in the next few years.
