In terms of scheme and personnel I guess the question is, could Smart be better off playing PG more often?
Suppose he's not the SG/SF in small lineups (where his strength is not an asset), but rather setting up the offense and then playing off the ball in bigger lineups (say Smart/Brown/Crowder/Horford/AJ).
Can he post up smaller PGs and be effective, even if his primary role is often to draw a double and pass out of it?
His PG skills are there. And it seems to me that his defensive skills are better applied taking the other team out of their offense (i.e. guarding a PG) rather than simply defending individual players at the SG/SF spot.
All that said, I'd be shocked if these possibilities haven't occurred to Stevens et al., so maybe we have our answer already.
It's just amazing to me that after three years, this guy has not a single offensive skill that's even close to replacement level. And what's depressing is he really hasn't even improved on anything. We have other cases where a defensive specialist ended up finding just ONE thing he did well, and then had a really good career. Why can't Smart do that?
