Anyone remember Mike James? He was kind of a scrub but for some reason he was a terrific clutch shooter.

Mr. Russell never lost a game 7

Indeed, TP. Bill Russell 's Celtics were pushed to a deciding game 7 TEN different times, and he won all ten, posting monster stats in many of those games.

The highlight was probably a 30pt, 44 reb effort against the lakers in 1962.

Most people seem to overlook him, as he was primarily a defender and rebounder - but he played lock-down defense at the end of those games. And defense really does matter, especially in the tense final moments of games when teams are scrambling to get to the rim because the jump shots aren't falling.

In another thread I posted that Kobe Bryant is the clutchest player ever, and another poster demurred. I thought it an interesting topic for its own thread.

I am not sure if anyone despises the Lakers and Kobe as much as I do, but now that he is retired can we continue to deny his greatness? Is he not arguably the most clutch player ever?

When Kobe Bryant was at the height of his game, and the ball was passed to him with the game on the line and the clock running down, how many of you could truly say your heart did not sink?

Kobe?  You should be banned. Are you really a Celtic fan?

Bird was the best pure shooter of his time. Jordan was the best athlete on the floor in his time.
Riley did say it right!

After thinking about this a little I have to go with Bill Russell too. To have your team win a game 7 ten times is amazing. So many people undervalue defense though. Also, is a player 'clutch' because he hits the winning shot? What about getting the deciding rebound or the the key block shot? I guess the definition of clutch should go to the player/team who wins the game and not just on a last second shot therefore Russ has to be the winner here.

By the way, as good as the Warriors will become over the next few years it will be a great defensive team that beats them, not a great offensive team. A team like the "Bad Boy Piston' or maybe even our own Celtics when KG anchored the D.

I was just coming here to post nearly the exact same thing, lol! TP. He's so clutch that he saved the greatest season of his Hall of Fame career for his finale as a 40-year-old. Comes through late in a game, late in a season, and late in a career. Epic, clutchness-proving clutchness.

Robert Horry
That's who I was going to say.  Kobe wasn't clutch... he missed greater percentage of game winners than most.  Bird was clutch but he got to take all the final shots because he was Bird.  Horry was a role player who time and time again hit daggers.

that's because Kobe was such a fierce competitor that he took shots that other players would have not taken just to protect their shooting percentage.

I agree.

Being a clutch scorer isn't only about the percentage of shots you make, it's about your willingness to take the big shot - knowing full well that if you miss it and your team loses the game, it's all on you.

It takes an extreme amount of guts and an extreme amount of confidence to be that guy who could shoot 3-15 over the course of a game, and yet still have no hesitation taking the game winning shot at the end.  To know that people are going to blame you, to know that people are going to call you a ball hog - and to not care one bit.

When determining which players were most clutch we shouldn't only look at their percentages in the clutch, but also how many attempts they took.

Another underrated thing is defense.  Kevin Garnett was an incredibly clutch player who rarely gets credit for it.  He was never a ball hog, he wasn't a guy who BEGGED for the ball in the clutch.  But when he got it, he rarely missed. But more importantly, how many Celtics games were saved by KG's clutch defense?  Bit steals, but bocks, big hussle plays diving for the ball, clutch rebounds that saved games.  He was a monster for us.

When KG was wearing Celtcs green and caught the ball - either at 15 feet or at the basket - with the game on the line, I always had a huge amount of confidence that we were going to win the game.

  • Peace it's a board. We all will never agree.
Horry man. Dude won game 7s for teams he didn't even played for. Strangest career I've ever seen. Mediocre until it's time to close in the biggest moments of everyone's career, and hey, no problem -- Robert Horry!

TP - I have to agree with this one.  He's in the HoF exclusively because he's so clutch.  Nobody else will likely ever do that again.
Horry is the best clutch player that will not be voted in by the writers to the hall. He has the rings and shots to prove it. He made Clutch city roll.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism

Always thought this was a cruel joke. How can somebody go 1-8 in the finals (and that one came really late in his career) and get the nickname, "Mr. Clutch?"

Mike James averaged 20ppg one season. Somehow, this only netted him a MLE contract.
