Smaller pieces: Who else would you like to add this year?

A trade target id like too see added is Rudy Gay and for a variety of reasons:

1. Can score: you can say what you want about gay but there's no denying he's been a soild NBA scorer for about a decade now. I think this team still lacks bench scoring with loss of Turner.

2. Contract: 2 years 27 Million with an player option after next year. He will almost assuredly opt out with the contracts being passed out.

3. Availability: all indications are SAC is willing to move gay and his price won't be too high

And herein lies the problem. 10 years a scorer but not a relevant player in terms of leading or getting his team into the playoffs. He has had some decent talent on that kings team too.

I will be surprised if he cracks 15 million per unless he gets a 1+1

Fair points but he wouldn't be asked to start or lead this team. I would look him him as a role player who who can provide bench scoring.

The only guys I would want off that list of free agents are Meyers Leonard and Allan Crabbe. Crabbe would be expensive as reportedly he might get a 4 year $70 million offer from the Nets. Leonard has some injury concerns so a cheaper deal as a 1+1 might work. Problem is Portland has vowed to match any offers to these players.

Vowing to match offer sheets and actually following through are 2 different things.

I like ML alot more than other players with similar skill sets.  He's been held back by, among other things, multiple injuries to his shoulder (much like KO).  He showed this growth in his game this past year until he had to go under the knife.  If the C's medical staff clears him, I'd offer him a 3 yr deal or perhaps 4 (last year team option) and price it at a level that would make it a bitter pill to swallow if Portland were to match.  Or see if there's any interest in a sign and trade deal at more modest numbers using some of the assets the C's have which may appeal to Portland.

Problem is with Amir and Jerebko being guaranteed for next year the Celtics probably dont have the cap space to give Leonard and make his offer sheet too bitter a pill to swallow

Use 1 of them in a sign and trade then.

The point of the discussion to begin with was my saying I would like to add Leonard to what we already have. If we dont have enough room to make an offer Portland wouldnt match because we only have $10 million or so in cap space, what is the sense of subtracting a player from what we have to get Leonard? And why would Portland do a sign and trade for Amir's $12 million contract when they know Boston can only offer $10 million and they woukd be able to match that? Leonard is off the table because Portland loves him and because he is a restricted free agent

Amir, since you focused on him, is in the last year of his 2 yr deal so his expiring contract is appealing for cap purposes and filler for a larger deal if Portland is so inclined.  I didn't say that that alone would be sufficient to entice Portland to do a sign and trade tho.

Insofar as your comment that Portland "loves" Leonard, then why didn't they make him an offer to extend his contract on mutually satisfactory terms and prove his worth before signing him to a larger long term contract instead of allowing him to test the waters as a RFA?  They didn't, he's on the market and a viable target to improve the C's frontcourt.

I don't see any reason to get Leonard; he'd be redundant with KO and would cost more.

Beasley would be interesting if the Celtics could get him for cheap, but I think enough teams have an eye on him that he won't be a bargain unless he produces close to the tune of his pre-draft hype.  I'd take a flyer on him though if he can be had for a short deal at less than $9 mil a year, especially if trade options continue to fall through.
