This roster is set after picking up the Johnson and Jerekbo contracts. Unless a big trade came through... The Celtics need to further develop their young players Mickey, Rozier, Hunter, and Brown. Only set to lose Turner, Sullinger, and Zeller or most likely anyway..

15 man..
Thomas, Bradley, Smart, Horford, Crowder, Jerekbo, Johnson, Rozier, Mickey, Hunter, Olynck, Brown, Young, Yabuesele,Bentil
I dont see one or both of Yabusele and Bentil being on the squad this year and I wouldnt be shocked if the Celtics bring back Sullinger. I know a lot of this board hates Sully and have already written him off but I am not so completely sure the Celtics front office and coaching staff have. Maybe Yabusele or Bentil make the team if Danny clears a roster spot by dumping Young's salary on someone.
The issue with Sully for me is that if we sign him to anything longer than a one year deal it could prevent us from having max space next year.

So due to his weight/health and the need for cap space I'm not willing to give him more than a one year deal.  I'd be shocked if he took a one year deal but if he took a one year deal I'd love to have him back.

If you give him a one-year deal, you can't trade him without his consent.  I want to give him the same deal as Amir Johnson, two years with an unguaranteed second year, with a willingness to overpay a little in exchange for more flexibility.
I could see an Amir Johnson type deal cor Sully that overpays him greafly this year for the C's to have flexibility the following year if they want to not guarantee it. Something like $21 million the first year and $15 million the second year, if a contract like that is even possible. If Sully thinks his services are worth $18 million a year that is an $18 million average that nets him $3 million e tra this year for giving the team to be flexible while Sully tries to prove that he is worth huge money under this new cba.
So you don't think Sully has already proven he isn't worth a contract like that???
Is Timofy Mozgov? Is Evan Turner? Is Ian Mahinmi? Is Joakim Noah? A whole load of players this year have gotten ridiculous contracts. so, yeah, in this environment, Sullinger is probably worth $16-$18 million per year
Yes, which is exactly the reason we didn't go after any of those guys, right?
Those players set the market. The market dictates the value, not one team. Sully's value is probably in that range. For all the flack he gets, he posted good numbers. He posted numbers much better than some of those players.

Will Danny pay the market price? We will see. He didn't pay the market price for those other guys. But yeah, I think comparing Sully to those other players, he has earned that market price. Do I want Sully back at those numbers. Not long term. But for a year? Sure. Why not. A 1+1 second year non-guaranteed won't hurt our flexibility for next year's free agent class. All it does is put us over this year's cap. Big deal.

I'm good with the team as it is now, unless there are trades coming.

No that's my point, we already have seen.  Danny will not pay those prices for "average" big men.  Apparently he would rather save the cash and make another run at elite players after next season.

No we haven't seen because Danny still has the Sullinger RFA status to deal with. When its complete, then we shall see.

And again, I am not advocating a long term contract. Just the market value per year for one year.

I think a deep bench big like Taj  Gibson, Zach Randolph or Josh Mcroberts would be a good pickup. We could trade Hunter and young for one of them or throw in Bentil or 2nd round picks.

I would take Paul Pierce in a heartbeat if we could trade for him. I think he would enjoy this team and would be a great small ball 4 in limited minutes.

Otherwise it is prudent to keep sullinger or Zeller for a 1+1 as earlier stated.

Why not throw that same money at Gasol as was suggested for Sullinger?  He may well take 40 million if the first 25 is guaranteed. He hasn't signed yet I don't believe has he?

I am pretty sure Gasol reached an agreement with San Antonio. Yes the Deandre Jordan situation does mean its possible for a player to reneg on an agreement but that is the major exception to the rule.

He'll be dirt cheap but he still may be able to help replace what Turner brought if he's got anything left in the tank - Tayshaun Prince.

I'd hope that we will at least bring a few undrafted free agents to camp, provided that they're available, of course, since they've all signed partially guaranteed deals, iirc, with teams like the Wizards.

The only guys I would want off that list of free agents are Meyers Leonard and Allan Crabbe. Crabbe would be expensive as reportedly he might get a 4 year $70 million offer from the Nets. Leonard has some injury concerns so a cheaper deal as a 1+1 might work. Problem is Portland has vowed to match any offers to these players.

Vowing to match offer sheets and actually following through are 2 different things.

I like ML alot more than other players with similar skill sets.  He's been held back by, among other things, multiple injuries to his shoulder (much like KO).  He showed this growth in his game this past year until he had to go under the knife.  If the C's medical staff clears him, I'd offer him a 3 yr deal or perhaps 4 (last year team option) and price it at a level that would make it a bitter pill to swallow if Portland were to match.  Or see if there's any interest in a sign and trade deal at more modest numbers using some of the assets the C's have which may appeal to Portland.

Problem is with Amir and Jerebko being guaranteed for next year the Celtics probably dont have the cap space to give Leonard and make his offer sheet too bitter a pill to swallow

A trade target id like too see added is Rudy Gay and for a variety of reasons:

1. Can score: you can say what you want about gay but there's no denying he's been a soild NBA scorer for about a decade now. I think this team still lacks bench scoring with loss of Turner.

2. Contract: 2 years 27 Million with an player option after next year. He will almost assuredly opt out with the contracts being passed out.

3. Availability: all indications are SAC is willing to move gay and his price won't be too high

Use 1 of them in a sign and trade then.

The point of the discussion to begin with was my saying I would like to add Leonard to what we already have. If we dont have enough room to make an offer Portland wouldnt match because we only have $10 million or so in cap space, what is the sense of subtracting a player from what we have to get Leonard? And why would Portland do a sign and trade for Amir's $12 million contract when they know Boston can only offer $10 million and they woukd be able to match that? Leonard is off the table because Portland loves him and because he is a restricted free agent
