I wish we could get some sort of conditional future 2nd out of him but I doubt it.  We need the roster space more than him. Buyout. Bust

We drafted him as a project, so I assume that Ainge understood that he could be half-baked at this point and could need more time learning the game.

Unfortunately for Young, Ainge stockpiled picks and the team got good, and now we have a roster crunch. This could lead Ainge to cut bait quicker than he would have otherwise. Also, we have Brown, who already looks close to being a contributor.

If he still seems like a better prospect than our late picks, Danny would just keep him and let the late round picks walk.

Can we please stop taking players who need to 'learn the game'?  How do guys even make it to the NBA without knowing how to play?  I'm just sick and tired of the, "well, he has all of the tools to be a great player, but he doesn't have the skill yet,' or the , "he doesn't know how to play and/or work, but he's such a great athlete that we'll teach him that stuff later," mantras.  If a guy doesn't have any skill by the time he's drafted, he's not just going to wake up one morning and become an all star, nor should he have been drafted in the first place, imo.  Ugh.
The problem is that college basketball is a joke and the guys are young. All college players have a ton to learn.

No one says he will "wake up one morning" a good player. No one develops like that. They develop gradually.

Personally, I have major concerns with a wing who can't contribute in the NBA for 2 full seasons.

This is where the Danny Ainge Fan Club comes by to defend a miserable, miserable wasted 1st round draft pick.

I realize everyone and their mother now claims we should have taken Rodney Hood, but it was pick #17 not a top 10 pick.

Top 10 you can't screw up.  After about 15?  I say you can take a swing for the fences especially with the plethora of picks we had/have coming after that.  It didn't exactly set our franchise back a decade people need to chill about this pick.

For the record I'm fine dumping James Young right now as well, I think he looks like a deer in the headlights on both sides of the floor during actual NBA minutes.

I realize that they're young, and I'm not asking for a finished product, but can the player(s) we take at least have the ability to dribble?  Please? ;D I'm trying to set the bar as low as possible ;D.

:o Oh yes you can.  You can screw up the number one pick.  See: Brown, Kwame, and Bennett, Anthony, for example, lol ;D.

100 percent agree. Will never be more than an end of the bench guy in the league. Has a long way to go to be that even. Has no ability to comprehend the flow of the game and when to drive, dish, etc. Then when he drives and looks stupid he whines to the ref like that was the reason. Reminds me of bad Tony Allen. Unfortunately he doesn't have any of the good TA in him. Cut the bum.

It is time to "move on"?! Did I say anything after reporting one of the most vulgar comments that I have ever seen on this site? How about instead "thank you. this is completely outside the rules and not the type of language we want to have on this site. We are sorry that you had to see that post from him." Instead you make it sound like I am complaining over nothing and going on and on about it. You don't even remove his post from the thread. This is one of the reasons that I rarely participate in this site anymore. You make a big deal out of some things that are very minor, but yet look like youre protecting one of your buddies who does something truly egregious. Very sad.
I just saw this report and am taking steps. Please PM me as I don't see who you are talking too.

Saw a tweet from Kevin O'Connor last night that Malcolm Miller from the Red Claws is now a better prospect.  I think I agree.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
Remember last year when an unnamed GM said that in this [2015] draft, Young would be a top 10 pick? My, it sure would have been nice to trade him for any pick then, let alone a top 10 pick.

I am also in agreement with others - the roster is overcrowded. We are simultaneously trying to compete for a top spot in the conference while rebuilding with young talented players. There will eventually be a time when each team will have their own minor league team to send down players to (without having it count towards the roster limit), but it won't happen in time to save guys like Young.

There is only one spot on this roster for RJ/Young and RJ proved quite a bit more last night than James - I suspect this will continue throughout summer league. It's funny, because Young is amazing in the D-League, but he just hasn't been able to mentally put it together in the NBA.

I really liked the pick at the time. Blame James not Danny.

Probably good to remember that Young was a mid 1st round pick, one of a great many the Celts have had over the last few years.  Ainge took a shot in the dark on a super-young, super-raw prospect.  It looks like if he ever becomes an NBA player, it won't be in a Celtics uniform.  Oh well.

As long as a couple of the guys Ainge has taken in a similar range -- Rozier, Hunter, Mickey, Guerschon, Zizic -- turn into reliable contributors, the Celtics will be in good shape.

It's unanimous, let's save a roster space for another rookie.

The reason why guys like Young never get cut is because it's a high risk, low reward move.
