I don't believe that there is a strong market for Milsap.

Dude because they have never won. They have no upside. Do you not see that? They're an older team with limited capability of improving. The Celtics on the other hand are on the upswing. Nobody thinks we're the better team, but if we sign Horford, we'll still have a max contract to add on the team. It seems fairly clear to me.
Yes, there is an awful lot of ifs there, and Atlanta already made a pretty substantial signing. I think it is pretty clear cut Atlanta is the better team at this point -- not to mention they have home advantage. This whole thing about Horford "choosing money over winning" is crazy talk.

It looks like today's theme is being deeply upset that a player might figure out that a 5 year max >>> 4 year max, especially at 30.  I'd like Horford here but an ability to figure out which of two numbers is bigger doesn't mean he's stabbing us in the back somehow.

Honestly, we all know that Atlanta isn't a championship-level team regardless what happens with Horford.

If he chooses money over winning, then he's no better than Anthony staying in New York for the big payday, and he doesn't belong on this team. There, I said it.

I think the problem with this reasoning is that Atlanta just easily eliminated us from a higher seed.  I don't think their next 5 years are brighter than ours but a player on their team could easily think so.

Also that 5th year is something like $35 million.  It's a lot easier to pass on $35 million on someone else's behalf than to leave it on the table yourself.

Can you think of a better player out there to get to the salary floor?  Clearly the Hawks do not want money back.

It's not the end of the world if we don't get Durant or Horford.  We just keep building through the draft hoping our guys develop or we land someone.  We've already been improving each year.   The point is to attract players like this, but we can still develop our own guys and have more picks coming.  It's not as much a sure thing as signing guys outright but we have a good team and draft well we have to hit eventually. Or just have a really talented team.

NBA superstars aren't what they used to be anyways.  They aren't Brady or Russell or guys like that.  They aren't willing to sacrifice anything as far as money goes.  They aren't as unselfish on the court either.

We have to worry about signing and keeping our own guys but have leverage that way.

I wish we could make a Millsap deal instead of getting Horford at all but we'd kinda be undercutting ourselves there.  Tricky spot to be in.

I expect to hear in about an hour or so that Horford has agreed to a slightly below max deal to stay in Atlanta and that Millsap has been traded to Philly for picks.

If they have to move Milsap to keep Horford, that not only negates the Howard signing, they take a significant step backwards. They also gave away Teague for nothing. So I ask again, what major pieces did they add? You have to take into account the major pieces they gave away. The net value is negative.

Sully stays if no Horford.  Just an FYI.

 We upgraded Turner with Jaylen.

The salary floor, or the minimum amount teams will need to spend on payroll next season, is now $84.6 million. There's no penalty if a team falls short of spending that amount; in the event that occurs, the team simply cuts a check for the rest and those dollars get divided among the players who finish the season on the roster.

Reports indicate the exact opposite.

It's like you didn't read what I said. Did I say the Celtics were better??? I said upside. Basically you're saying the Celtics should've signed Horford and Howard because honestly they could've signed Howard. You know why they didn't? Because filling up their cap space this year is not going to get them a championship. Now enjoy the Hawks get swept again against an elite team and not improve year over year because they are financially constraint.

Pretty much, TP.

Or they can add an all-star on a one year contract without having to send important contracts back.
