Young is a nice role player and a decent pro but nothing more. He gets statistics because he plays a lot of minutes for bad teams. Is Thad Young going to bring the Cs more wins that resigning Sullinger or getting a guy like Terrence Jones in free agency? Is he going to give us a new dimension that isn't already on the team with Amir Johnson?
People are right in saying that the #16 pick may never wind up as good as Young. But the whole point is that guys like Thad Young are common in the NBA. They cost you $12m a year. They don't win championships for you if they're in your starting 5. Whereas a draft pick is younger, cheaper and it's someone who on average may not be as good but occasionally is far better than a guy like Young and that's what this team needs. I'd much rather "swing for the fences" with draft-and-stash or high upside candidates like Maker, Skal or whomever else at 16 and 23 than spend it on a Brandon Bass type player when I already have the cap space to go get that type of guy in FA anyway.
