I think it's because his high school in Canada played a lot of games against US high schools so it's kind of like he's a US high school prospect. In this case he would not be eligible until being a year removed from high school (unless they convince the nba of this weird post grad year thing).

If the Celtics keep all of their picks I could see Maker going with the Celtics own 1st round. I wouldn't be too upset with that. I think Maker is eventually an nba player, but it may be after looking terrible for a year or two. Depends on his work ethic and mental strength. Perry Jones III is actually a good comp I think. Without injuries Perry Jones is a solid, but inconsistent nba player. The line between this and out of the league is thin and fragile though.

Does the NBA have any real ground for declaring him ineligible? I can see Maker pulling out of the draft late though like Porzingis did if he understands he won't be drafted very high.

Yes, they do.  He was in high school this year.  His argument is that he graduated last June and was taking classes to improve his grades and be eligible for college, but it's definitely a grey area in terms of the NBA rules, which require you to be finished with high school for a full NBA season.

Wherever Thon Maker gets drafted, expect him to spend most of next couple years in the D-League. NBA execs have mostly seen him regress.

I hope Danny at least gives him a couple GOOD workouts ......

Robert Upshaw had talent in college, and the reason most Celtic fans were wanting him was because of the need of a true center.  Thon Maker has the make up to being a great player if developed more because of his skills and size.  Giannis Antetokounmpo it's looking like drawing the biggest comparison.  Plus with the amount of picks the Celtics have, taking a chance on someone would work.  Also Upshaw lost a lot of his value not because of skill set but because of health and off the court issues.  None which Maker has now, that's been reported.

This is the third first-round pick for the Celtics and gives GM Danny Ainge a chance to take a big risk.

Maker's surprise decision to enter the draft caught everyone off guard. If the NBA agrees with him that he's eligible -- still a big if -- Maker will be the biggest question mark in the draft. He has the size, length, motor and mobility of a lottery pick. He also has an emerging 3-point shot that's attractive. But he is painfully thin and very, very raw.
