I see a couple people stepping up in the tourney and could move up a lot. Him not making it definitely hurts but to how much is up to the other players showing skills when it matters.

I don't think Richard Simmons was likely to be drafted, but coming out and saying he's fine and not being held in his house against his will can only help

What's up with LSU turning down the NIT?  Is that common practice for NCAA teams?

I hate it.  Keep playing if you're invited.  I've got a word for that team that I can't print on CelticsBlog.

I blame Simmons.  If their young superstar had gone to his coach and said "I want to play in the NIT," and rallied his teammates, that team would be playing in the consolation tournament.  This stinks of sore-loser-i-ness.

He'll be the number one pick in June, though.  Luckily, our Celtics probably won't get the number one pick.

If the NIKE president told me I could get a $100 million shoe deal I wouldn't want to play in the NIT either.....An interesting question is where would Simmons have been drafted if he could have come out last year? I think still a top 5 pick.

Blaming a player for what is most certainly a decision he had _ZERO_ input into seems misdirected.  That sort of decision is made by the athletic director's office.

If LSU is deciding whether or not to play in the NIT based on Ben Simmons' wishes, that says a lot more about the LSU coaches and adminsitration than it does about Simmons.

It's been known to happen before.  Georgetown declined in '02 and Maryland in '06.

IIRC, Georgetown used the excuse it wanted to give students a chance to focus on midterms.

Maryland was actually hosting NIT games, so the University pressured the basketball team to accept after they had already declined.

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class

i don't think LSU's performance in the end matters much to NBA scouts.

Wiggins and Embiid went at #1 & #3 in the 2014 draft despite Kansas' unimpressive exit from the tourney.

I think what most of the scouts are looking for are the direct player attributes that map to the NBA game.  In particular, I think they are looking to see if that kid has something, some skill or attribute, that will definitely be an advantage in the NBA.    I don't think they put quite as much stock in how the kid's team performs as some fans do.

It's possible that one or two teams might have needs or wants in a player that cause them to put Ingram over Simmons on their board (for example, Philadelphia desperately needs shooting and they have a glut of front court players).  But I think for the vast majority Simmons will remain at the top.

Nope, this can only help.

You have to pay attention.   The more games you play, the more they focus on your flaws.

Draft Express came out with a new mock today and Simmons was moved to the second spot. I am curious if this is Givony's opinion or if a league insider indicated that Simmons was slipping.

You guys got it all wrong.
Simmons is "tanking" trying to lower his value so to avoid getting picked by the Sixers.

It changed in the Vertical mock, which is a collaboration between Marks and Givony, too. I think league sources are probably indicating that sentiment is changing.

This sounds like a lot of the criticism that was leveled at Wiggins in 2014.  Kansas made the tournament, but left quickly, and was generally an underwhelming team most of the season.  Parker started becoming a trendy option for #1 overall.  Wiggins was picked, and clearly he was the more talented player.

I do think Simmons served himself poorly in going to LSU, who helped to enable some of this selfish tendencies.  But really, when his floor is 6'10" Rajon Rondo, how could you not want that?

I've liked Ingram better all along, so this is trend is not hugely surprising to me. As for Wiggins, it's starting to look like Jabari may be the better prospect, so maybe those second thoughts were justified.

The only way the draft value falls based on not playing is if the only person that could conceivably catch you has a monster tournament.  In other words if Ingram goes off in multiple games he could pass Simmons, but that would be more about Ingram passing Simmons than Simmons falling.  And I'm not saying Ingram can pass Simmons, only that he is the only guy that could possibly do it.

Pretty much this.

Also keep in mind that we're still in "nitpicking & tear down" season.  Once these guys start having the pre-draft workouts & private team meetings, the pendulum will swing back towards items like "potential" & "upside".   The loud noise of the nitpicking of these top guys will subdue.
