I wonder if Ainge is going to target someone else with the available roster slot. A younger player, perhaps on a two- or a one-plus-one-year deal, using exception money.

Don't see the point of that.  We have six players who will still be on rookie deals next year, plus 8 draft picks, plus two recent second-rounders hanging out overseas.  I mean, sure, if there's someone you think is a star in the making out there, I guess you sign him, but that player probably isn't out there, and we have no room for him on the roster.  At all.  Better to sign a useful-in-a-specific-situation veteran like Novak.

Had a similar situation last year, but Ainge attempted to sign JaVale anyways.

Yep, would rather have Novak than Hunter as 3 pt specialist.

I would rather have our old friend Jordan Crawford back. He had an unbelievable year in China and he could shoot the 3 for us.

It wasn't really the same.  Last season a) wasn't a clear playoff team, b) had half the upcoming draft picks, and c) didn't already have $17 million in non-guaranteed contracts next summer to play with, which is why Ainge wanted someone with a non-guaranteed deal.

I'd rather not sign a veteran to replace Lee. Lee wasn't playing anyway so I don't want to bring in a guy who will expect to get minutes.

I'd probably rather give RJ or Young any minutes Novak would otherwise get.
This Celtics team is about winning. While I don't think they are delusional enough to believe they can contend, I do believe they want to win every game possible before the season comes to an end in the playoffs. What that means is if a get is out there that can give this team more than a rookie, that get is going to be signed and used.

Hunter, Rozier, Mickey and Young aren't going to start getting rotational minutes. They just aren't that good right now and this team doesn't care that we the fans want to see the young guys to evaluate them. The Front office and coach have done all the evaluating they need to do in practice. When the kids get good enough to earn playing time they will get it, not before.
With Olynyk out I predict they go small and give some of his minutes to either Hunter or Young.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

Kevin Martin is terrible. Why would anyone want him?

I wouldn't mind Novak taking Lee's roster spot. We have enough depth that I'd rather have someone with a really narrow role than just another player who's worse than 14 other players on the roster. Obviously there's an issue if he's in your regular rotation, but when he's on the court he's as good of a 3PT weapon as anyone in the league - about a 3PT for every 10 mins played in his career, at 43%. That's Stephen Curry territory, albeit without virtually every other skill...

I look at it this way: he's a veteran, good locker room guy, might help you steal a game somewhere down the line, and a good coach can use a 6'10" deadeye shooter here and there. We play team defense so he's not going to kill your chances for a couple minutes at a time, especially if he's hitting shots or screwing with the opposing defense/spacing.

I sincerely hope Ainge signs Jonathan Holmes to a team friendly deal (ala Chris Johnson or Babb). I remain a believer he has solid potential.

Novak won't get any minutes, hardly.  He plays the stretch 4, so conceivably could be in line for minutes if Jerebko went down, but those aren't going to James Young anyway.
Your third big on the depth chart is out 3 weeks, and your fifth big just got cut. He will absolutely get minutes if signed.

Not except in garbage time, he won't.  If this were a real concern, Lee wouldn't have been released today.

If your team employs Steve Novak in the year 2016 and he is actually getting minutes, your team is in serious trouble.

1. He can't be worse than Jerebko, and
2. Three-point shooting is a need right now.

Huh? Cs are in of a back-up 4, so they waived one (who played in 2 all-star games) today?

You mean the guy who demonstrated repeatedly he's done? Why not sign Bill Walton then, he's got 2 ASGs himself and can probably give you more than David Lee right now. :)
