As usual, I think Danny is going to look like the smart one this summer in Chicago, if you believe the Butler theory.

How disgruntled will Butler be this offseason after the Bulls lose 45-50 games, Gasol opts out, Noah is gone, and Rose is still on the roster for $21M? They'll have no center and a core that relies heavily on Mirotic, McDermott and Portis - all nice enough prospects but the players Butler wants to spend his prime building around? There's no way that team contends with Cleveland, Boston, Toronto unless they sign a max player... and even then they'll have a ton of holes to fill with no future at the PG & center positions.

All of a sudden Boston will be offering cap space and future picks... something less than what could have been on the table just a few days ago.

Well, the organization is also under a bit of a delusional fantasy that free agents will want to go to Chicago because "they've made the playoffs 7 years in a row".

Donoghus from your personal perspective, if it was for indeed Butler, what do you think the offer ended up being?

Oh man, I don't know.  Prob some insane combo involving BKN picks, Bradley, Olynyk, and Crowder

Think if Ainge truly wanted Butler, keeping Crowder would've been a must, considering the close relationship between the two.

On a separate note, Ainge is pretty shrewd and sly, and he could certainly have this so called proposed deal set up, or he could literally be bluffing. Other than that the 3 stars he was reportedly pursuing, how else could it benefit him to admit to talking to Houston, Atlanta, and Cleveland?
"I bomb atomically, Socrates' philosophies and hypotheses

Is the glass half-full or half-empty?
It's based on your perspective, quite simply
We're the same and we're not; know what I'm saying? Listen
Son, I ain't better than you, I just think different

I imagine teams were still weary of trading for the Brooklyn pick.  A lot of games left to be played and still time for the Nets to spoil the party a bit.

My guess is that if we land a top 2 pick, we probably avoid trading it.  If we don't land a top 2 pick, these deals might not be on the table anymore.

I could not agree with you more. I could try, but would be unable to do so, which is why I'm betting against summer fireworks.

First thoughts on the trade were Butler and George. I've gotten used to thinking of Indy as a team on the verge of blowing it up and hitting reset. But when I look at who is more likely to blow it up now, I'd go with Chicago. Also, which of those teams seems more likely to want to dump expensive contracts and pick up rookies and/or cheap contracts because they don't like to spend money?

My guess is the offer was Bradley, BKN 16 and one other non-BKN for Butler.

Paul George?

Oh boy that would be SOME sort of Sweet ......IT and George would be great pair for this last five minutes ...when you  NEED a bucket to win a game.

I sure hope it's George they are after.

The issue with the media is most of these guys don't have the integrity or intelligence to report a shred of truth or even investigate what they say or write before they just start speculating and doing whatever they can to draw ratings.  One day they will actually report something that is actually interesting though. It always seems like the truth is the last resort though.  The whole manning thing is the same stuff.  His career is over now the truth comes out after millions of dollars were made at other peoples expense though first.

Whoever Danny trades for will be the same thing and it will have nothing to do with what the media says is true.

I think Ainge only said this to appease fans who demand he make a blockbuster trade at the expense of our best assets immediately.

Draft: 8 first rounders in next 5 years.

Cap space: $24 mil.

In my opinion, leading up to the deadline craziness most fans were generally pretty level-headed about our current situation.  In fact I think more people wanted to keep this core intact rather than overpay for someone in a midseason trade.

With all that said - I could definitely see Ainge putting some BS out there to get people excited about the off-season.  Much like the fireworks comment which I think was last summer (also can't remember if that was Ainge or Wyc but I consider them as being on the same wavelength).

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
Jimmy Butler will be a Celtic this offseason.
So Chicago is going to go nuclear with their roster?  I do think their current window is closed but I don't see why they would trade Butler.  If anything, he's the primary building block to get to the next window with that organization.  Their hands are gonna be kinda tied until they shed that Rose contract but I think they should, at least, keep Butler around.

My guess is that Jimmy being 26, will be 27/28 years old by b the time they shed Rose from the books. We heard earlier thisbseason that he was unhappy with Hoiberg as coach. If he's unhappy with the Bulls immediate future during his prime then he may demand a trade.

They see how tough it's gonna be coming through the East vs Cavs and the Celtics for the next 5 years an THEN get past OKC/GSW/ San Antonio etc...
Reset now and try and get some draft luck like they had with Rose.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

Most likely love

He's still on contract with cavs past next season so hints at future trade in works

Plus it was pretty much covered that there were talks by Boston with cavs for love

As well as love being a piece that can attract another free agent

That's exactly why it is not Love.
Ainge said it would've been a surprise.

I understand that Ainge couldn't say it himself, but I really wish that a name had been solidly leaked, because for the next several months there are going to be fans speculating that it was Player X or Player Y simply because that's the player they most want it to be. Oh wait, a name was kind of sort of leaked via RealGM insiders. It was Butler. Can we spend less time guessing which player it was, and more time figuring out how Butler would be used on this team? If he's used as a SG, how would that affect the roles of Smart and Bradley? If he's used as a SF, how would that affect Crowder's role?

Would make sense if that's the case.  The celtics want  young moldable talent vs some of these other guys.
