Once Silver said that the league would not take any action against them (early last year, as I recall), they have gone full bore to lose as much as possible. I think it will pay off for them in a couple of years, especially if Embiid can finally heal and get on the court.   I actually think the strategy will eventually work.

And that is when the other teams (and their fans) will get really upset...

Will Philly look like geniuses if: 1) Embiid comes back fully healthy and plays up to his potential. 2) Saric comes over. 3) We acquire Noel for Brooklyn 2016 and that pick winds up as the 2nd pick in the draft. 4) The Lakers wind up 4th in the lottery thus the pick is conveyed to Philly. 5)Philly wins the lottery with their own pick giving Philly 1,2 and 4 in the draft and get Simmons plus two other valued prospects. 6) With all their cap space they sign two high quality free agents. The difference between genius and fool is often just luck.

Assign a probability to each IF and then multiply them to get to the probability of this chain of events all coming out in the Sixers favor.

1) 25% - Generous. It's 50% that he's not a complete bust given his medical issues and far less that he lives up to his potential,
2) 33% - Saric should stay overseas to avoid rookie scale, which is what I think his Daddy has been planning. I suspect he'll be a Euro bust, but that's JMO.
3) 10% - It's really 0-1%, but I wouldn't get to prove a point
4) 32% - Moving from 2 to 4
5) 25% - Worst record winning the lottery
6) 10% - It's really 0%. Sixers could well be the worst team ever this year, they have a bad rep among players and agents, and there's nothing about Philly that's going to attract FAs unless they are from there, and are homesick for cheese steaks which are the worst abomination in the history of food.

Comes out to a little less than a 1 in 15.000 chance (being generous on 3 and 6). Nothing genius about that. If this scenario comes to fruition, they'd be the luckiest Fs alive except for Dan Gilbert and the Cavs having LBJ decide to come home to save the worst run franchise in the NBA.

I enjoyed your analysis of my "what ifs". The one thing that I would add is that not all of these have to happen to keep Philly from becoming a perpetual dumpster fire. TP

Merry Christmas to Tony Wroten. Jeez.

So much for him helping

At least they're replacing him with Ish Smith, who will actually help the abyss that is their backcourt. Since this will effectively help them in the short-term, does anyone really think this kind of move would have happened pre-Colangelo?

Seems like the most conclusive evidence we've seen so far that they're done with the old ways.

(Oh Edited.  Profanity and masked profanity are against forum rules and may result in discipline., have I just summoned LarBrd33?)

Maybe. Smith was not re-signed by Hinkie, but Wroten was not the same player after his ACL injury either.

Quote
Smith averaged 12 points, 6.1 assists, and 1.3 steals in 25 games last season with the Sixers after being claimed off waivers from the Pelicans. The Sixers chose not to re-sign him in the offseason.

Quote
Wroten averaged 8.4 points, 2.5 assists, and 3.6 turnovers in eight games this season after being sidelined for the last 101/2 months due to a partially torn right anterior cruciate ligament. ...  In 30 games last season, Wroten averaged 16.9 points, 5.2 assists, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.6 steals. He started 15 games. The 22-year-old has a contract that expires at the conclusion of this season.

But Tom Moore, who's a Sixer beatwriter, sees JC in-charge of this move

Quote
It appears Jerry Colangelo has made his first moves since joining the 76ers. The new Sixers' chairman of basketball operations seemed to be the driving force behind trading a pair of second-round picks to the Pelicans in exchange for point guard Ish Smith, who played with the Sixers last season and is a favorite of Nerlens Noel.

More  about Hinkie and his issues with agents. I know there has been complaints about how he handled contract issues and how he hasn't honored handshake agreements too.

Quote
Hinkie Having a better relationship with agents also helps.

His not calling agents back in a timely fashion - or at all - has been well documented. His reputation with agents is even starting to hurt him.

According to multiple sources, Hinkie wasn't permitted to interview Kristaps Porzingis during his predraft workout in Las Vegas in June. But Porzingis, who went fourth to the New York Knicks, wasn't the draft prospect that agents were trying to get from the Sixers.

Sources say that Okafor's camp wasn't in favor of him playing for the Sixers during the draft process. And there's conflicting stories about D'Angelo Russell. Some say that he welcomed the idea of playing in Philadelphia, at least initially in the draft process. Others say he wasn't in favor.

One agent said in October that he doesn't want his max-level players in Philadelphia. He is open to his mid-level players signing with the Sixers only if they overpay.

a bit of a bump, but a sixer update.

the trade for ish smith has made a real difference in the play of noel at least.

since smith's arrival Noel has put up:

18/6/5/2 on 8-9 FG
20/9/4 on 8-12 FG
15/12/3 on 6-11 FG

and remember, smith is a marginal nba player. what would noel look like if they had a real pg guard and a real roster? we may never know.  :)

I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

it also coincides with Noel being the starting center and Okafor getting relegated to the bench.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

I think moving Okafor to the bench as opposed to Noel has helped both Noah and the team. Do they play together well? I haven't watched or dug deep into the Sixers at all but it seems that playing Noel and Okafor together isn't such a terrible idea due to their opposite skill sets...However, I have no idea and am genuinely curious.

They are stockpiling assets of which this league has not seen in a long long time, once they decide to flip the switch this summer the rest of the league better watch out, only the Sixers can contain the damage they will do to the rest of the NBA.
Sam Hinkie should be on the tv show Hoarders.
He is playing chess when most of the other GM's are playing checkers.
Too bad his Queen has sore feet and can't move at present.Luckily for Hinkie he could get his new Queen and possibly a Rook in the draft this year.

Could take him many, many years to get in position to check mate the rest of the league though.... ;)
