Could change topic heading to trade instead of deal perhaps?

Interesting little bite there.
Thought he was trying to be funny and then read the full quote.
God I hope we do trade him.

Why do you hope we trade him?

I just don't think he's got the heart/mentality to be a starting forward in the NBA. Just can't ever see him getting much better.
Just a personal opinion.

Fair enough.  You're certainly not alone on that.

I happen to think he is a better fit as a starting center than at power forward.  Again, despite the numbers backing me up on this, I know I'm not going to get much agreement from the majority of the fan base on that opinion.

Yeah I'm just very impatient with him for some reason.
I mean it would be great to see him next to a serious defensive big man and some solid drive & kick guards...I think he and Sully have both suffered from a lack of defensive help the past 2 years.

Just something about him seems really soft to me, almost like Jeff Green ie built to be a very special NBA player but something's just missing upstairs.
I hope he proves me wrong this season with Amir Johnson next to him-its the best opportunity he's going to have to prove us skeptics wrong. Unfortunately now he's gotta compete with David Lee too-not the best move for his development.

Well, if Mickey can develop into a defensive powerhouse, then you may be onto something. KO certainly has the tools and I was actually a little bummed about the Lee trade as he will likely get little chance to showcase those tools this year.
Bring in a year removed former All-star for a washed a player and not givng up a pick. Hmm great move. It is a trade you have to make. If KO rides the pine with Young this year. The hunger will grow for them to improve. It is what it is.

Agreed.

I have made no bones about being a big Kelly Olynyk fan, but as such, I don't think it's necessary to coddle him (or Sully for that matter).  If they show they deserve minutes, they'll get minutes.

I'm not really that concerned with whether they play twenty minutes a night or thirty minutes a night.  I'm more concerned about them showing they can be good contributors to a good team.

This year is a big test for both Kelly and Sully.  Bringing in vets to compete for minutes in the front court is part of the test.

I think they'll pass it.

I think CBS will play the best players.   One of those when healthy is going to be Amir.   The other spot is up for grabs,  but Ainge showed distrust of both of these guys by bringing in Amir and Lee.   That means that he thought our talent there was scarce.    One can hardly blame them, Sully has been saying this "best shape of my life" crap for years.  KO is all over the place in terms of his play, good one game and bad the next.

I think a lot will depend on Lee.   If he can play like his old self then I wager they do not pass the test.   Lee, Sully and KO are all not great defenders tough.  They will have an opportunity which is all a guy can ask for.

There's going to more than two spots available.  Unless, you're expecting the starters to play forty-eight minutes a night each?

I don't know - I get that it was an upgrade and it makes sense on paper, but unless people think that Lee has a future with the Celtics or that we actually have a chance to make a splash in this year's playoffs it seems like more of a hinderance to the possible development of our younger bigs. They've at least proven they can play in the NBA, but they need more minutes to see if they are cut out for a bigger role. With Lee here, they won't get that opportunity.

Meh .....just rattling off ....with the crowded position .....anybody could be part of a trade .

Unless something like a serious upgrade trade occurs ....I doubt he is going anywhere .

Sully , AB and kO are part part of a trade for a Boogie type player ,  major impact . DA not wasting their value on another player of equal talent.

Pretty much yes. I doubt he'll get the 20+ mpg he got last year. One more sign this season results will matter more than in the previous 2 seasons(without this meaning player development is of no importance).

Having said this, Kelly will get his 10-15 mpg + a few playoff games, arguably that's enough for him to progress.

@chambers

adding to the above and given that

1/ salary cap flexibility makes lots of sense unless you are a contender (and we know DA approves of this approach)
2/Sullynyk are on expirings which can be great value for money for contenders
3/we have lots of cheap labour coming in (aka rookie contracts) in the next couple of drafts.
4/ we have the team's options for Amir and Lee's second year.
5/2016's huge FA +salary cap going up.

im already on the watch out for a AS break trade involving at least one of Kelly/Sully.

Having said this, Kelly will get his 10-15 mpg + a few playoff games, arguably that's enough for him to progress.

I think players like Olynyk who have confidence / passiveness issues are best handled by throwing them out on the court for 30+ minutes a night. Getting them comfortable that their minutes are going to be there and that they are an important part of the team.

I also think jump-shooting big men in general improve from having consistent long minutes. It's much easier to shoot more consistently when playing longer minutes than coming into games cold and knowing you don't have long to make an impact. Especially offensive orientated players who don't make much of a positive impact as a defender or rebounder. Miss a few shots and it's hard to have a positive impact when you get those opportunities.

So .... my expectation is that this increased competition for minutes and likely reduction in playing time will hurt Olynyk's development.

Good points, but KO was only getting 22mpg last year.
IMO only way he can get 30mpg is getting traded to Philly.
I cannot imagine any other team sacrificing so many mpg just to see Kelly develop.

Meh, dude is talking in generalities about life in the NBA. No need to read between the lines. One always has to be prepared to get traded because that's the reality of the NBA period, even more so when he was part of two years of constant roster turnover.

Agreed.

Disagree.  They have to make a choice between Sullinger and KO at some point.  Danny is not going to let Sully walk.  I personally think Sully has the most overall talent of anyone on the Cs roster.  If he is not a long term health issue, then KO is expendable.

KO knows this, his agent knows this, and he knows Danny knows this.

I think just as much as KO saw Lee and Amir come in to play ahead of him he also saw Jordan Mickey get drafted behind him and is looking over his shoulder. He saw Mickey do pretty well in summer. He saw Mickey get basically a first round contract. He knows he has to be better.

I agree for the most part. I think Sullinger is the better over all player, but I also think Kelly's skill set could make him a very deadly weapon if he developed some balls. As brought up in other discussions, Lee and Amir Johnson were brought here because their contracts are nice- but they will also teach our rookies about playing hard and working hard (whilst competing for minutes).
Hopefully this helps remove some of Olynyk  'softness' and helps Sullinger get his attitude towards his health and his work ethic out of the gutter.
