His voice is like nails on a chalkboard.

Smart guy. Can't listen to him without wanting to commit homicide.

I love Hubie's voice and speech pattern.  He's my alltime favorite.
And I can't stand Jackson's catch phrases.  He really seems to go out of his way to use them.  They are very redundant and it's not very clever when he has to say the same stuff over and over.

Agreed.

Mike is my favorite commentator, I think. Nationally it's Walton. Maybe JVG. I don't need guys talking about what I can see on my own.

I know he wasn't a commentator, but I wish there were more guys like Jack Ramsey around the game and giving analysis today.

I do not buy these crap about the 90's being watered down.

First of all, today's league is bad.......basketball is transitioning to a 3 point contest now, fundamentals lost, defense lazy.....

Its sad to see people on here talking about no superstars in the past..

back then social media was not around, internet was barely around...

Now we consider multiple player stars or really good players.

The reality is that teams like the Pacers, who someone in this thread said earlier, had all ROLE PLAYERS besides reggie just goes to show what name value does to a person's perspective...

That Pacers team would mop the floor with any team in the east right now. I put my money with that Knicks or Pacers team....

Rik Smits was a role player??????

Today he would average 23 and 13 Easily in the EAST especially.

The 90's destroys what we have now.

Curry won a championship for god sakes. This would have never happened in the 90's.

I agree with this.

I often laugh thinking how much Shawn Kemp and Gary Payton would dominate in today's league. That's just one example because I love the guys, but I agree wholeheartedly with celtics2030's sentiment.

I've enjoyed this thread more than any other in quite a while. Haven't been able to check back in but it seems my comments regarding the 90s being one of the best basketball eras ever spurred some debate!

Let me clarify, I understand the reservations of those who believe it was a watered-down league w/ expansion teams, good timing for Jordan, bad for everyone else, etc. but it was just a good time for basketball. It relished the growth and progression brought on by Bird/Magic and soon transitioned into the Jordan era. Maybe it's too difficult to compare eras but regardless, what matters is what Jackson thinks (just hold on...) and I'm confident that HE thinks the 90s were the best ever simply because he was in it. Therefore he may rarely give players from past generations their due, especially a certain white member of the Celtics.
Long-form is far from dead, but please refrain from paragraph-laden posts! Who wants to read that?!

I agree with this for the most part, at least about the 90's sentiments...
I do disagree with your thoughts about today's league, I personally feel the NBA is in a great place, probably the best place it's been since the 90's. The early 00's were just awful for me, I couldn't even watch the product on the floor. I think today's NBA closely resembles the 90's, lots of competitive teams with one - four being instant contenders.. I think people should be happy with what we are getting with today's NBA.

As for Mark Jackson, hell of a coach, got a raw deal, but a terrible announcer. Guy is too preachy and sounds angry all the time... I put him on the same level as Steven A. Smith, just less offensive and annoying. Similar speech patterns and know-it-all tone, I'd be happy if both were removed from broadcasting.

who said there were no stars in the past?i named a bunch, and i just said they were spread out.

and no, rik smits was a career 15ppg, 6 reb, 1.3 blocks. that's not elite, he's no more of a star than deandre jordan, and that's with weaker defense. and no way does his rebounding magically double in this era. i watched him play, he was a very good player, but he wasn't nearly good enough to be the second-best player on a championship team. it's no surprise they never even made it to one conference final.

the league has indeed changed due to increased efficiency at the 3-point line, but it's not right to assume that that makes the league less talented. if anything, guys need to be quicker to close out on jumpshots now.

BTW, the international talent is undeniably way better now, with pretty much the same number of teams. euro ball has improved. all these things mean than it's easier to find high-end talent. we're drawing form a bigger gene pool now.

so unless human genetics has magically gotten worse over the last couple decades, then the talent level should be at least as high as it was then.

The 90s was watered down, teams at the most had two all stars, in the eighties the Celtics and Lakers were stacked.  They had some unbelievable players in the 90s, that power was diluted by expansion.

I agree, today's league at times can be bad.  I think however, that defenses are more advanced than ever, but a lot of guys do not commit to it.

Is it so bad that a  real bball player and not an athletic freak lead his team to the championship?

Lebron is the greatest traveling forward of all time.
He travels every single time he makes a move.
If they called his travels, and his offensive fouls, he wouldn't be half as effective as he is.

Haha, you're right. LeTravel James!

Guys are quicker, faster more athletic and defense is way more advanced. This is a pretty well known fact. Defense was hardly played in the 80s.Hence why game scores were at a  well over 100 points in the 80s while the pace now is is about 90 points. Pls dont confuse cheap shots or taking hard fouls as playing good defense.

Its sad to see people on here talking about no superstars in the past..

If only social media was around then to shine a bright lights on MJ being **** to team mates or his gambling. Or Malone sleeping with 14 yo girls!! Or Larry Bird fathering a Edited for profanity.  Please do not do it again. child and not even acknowledging the child eh!! ::) ::)

Pacers team with reggie miller (who couldnt even create his own shot) as it best player!! ::)In this era, Reggie miller is at best a rich mans kyle korver due to his defense. he is not close to being a top 10 player. Top 20 at best

Dont even get me started with those all defense and no offense knicks teams

Rik Smits was a role player??????

Yeah this assertion based on absolutely nothing but carry on

Pretty sure Warriors would have wiped the floor with the bulls if MJ was missing pippen and Rodman or grant. Afterall the same MJ was getting 1st round exits till Pippen came along
