Guys are quicker, faster more athletic and defense is way more advanced. This is a pretty well known fact. Defense was hardly played in the 80s.Hence why game scores were at a  well over 100 points in the 80s while the pace now is is about 90 points. Pls dont confuse cheap shots or taking hard fouls as playing good defense.

Hand-checking was allowed back then, perhaps your too young to recall?   MJ would have been quicker without it too.   Some of the players today would whine if they got hand-checked or completely neutralized with a build like Curry's.  Getting rid of that really helped the offense.  I can see a lot of guys having trouble with hand checks today.  Getting rid of that really help guard production.

I think the no charge circle gave more power to the bigs too.   They basically invented that to allow Shaq to charge over people and to compensate for his lack of range.

Overall, I can't argue that the athletes today are not better athletes.   Skill wise though it is the opposite.  I think guys in the 80s were more complete players, in terms of skill.   There are some really complete players today but specialization has really become the order of the day.

Bigs back then were way more skilled than the ones today.    They had post moves and a lot of them could pop out.    There are guys who can do that today, but you also have a lot of guys who can only dunk.  As crazy as it sounds, I think the league had more size back then in seven footers than today.

Three point shooting has vastly improved today.   That is not up for discussion.   Bird was a great three point shooter, but he hated that shot.   I would want Larry in the three point contest or to take a final shot but there are several guys I would pick over him in terms of three point production in a game.

Toughness wise I give to the 80s guys.   They played without Air conditioning and modern amnities.   They played hurt a lot more too.

Yh am sure hand checking is stopping athletic freaks like Lebron and westbrook from getting to the rim. Curry would just get his C or P to screen off his defender get faced matched up to a much slower defender and still easily get his shot off. You need to ask yourself how great MJ (notoriously avg 3point shooter) would have been if zone defense was allowed or if teams were allowed then to load up the weak side like they always do with Lebron now

Sounds like the typical old man `My time was much better`!! I am just not seeing the skills they had in the 80s that arent there now. Is ball handling, passing, shooting, finish at rim. All I can think of is more bigs with post moves and thats is more to do with were the game is going with pnr and 3 point shooting rather than traditional isos and post ups

The bigs then might have more post moves but they are generally nowhere as mobile or versatile as the avg bigs now despite similar size. Right now we have mobile bigs that can shoot the 3ball becoming a norm. That was super rare then.

Toughness wise I give to the 80s guys.   They played without Air conditioning and modern amnities.   They played hurt a lot more too.

Yh and generally had shorter careers as a result. Sounds like stupidity if you ask me

Handchecking affects all games now.   This shifted and the three point shot shifted the balance of power from the bigs to the guards to a large extent.   Jordan could busts the seams in a zone with his mid range.   Teams had their own set of rules for Jordan, perhaps your too young to recall that.

I clearly admitted that the modern game was better in a few areas.  But post players were more polished back then because the game emphasized them.   If you can't understand that then I truly feel for you.  The three point line was new in the NBA in the 80s.

Thanks for admitting when your wrong.    Forwards from that Era had plenty of guys who could shoot.  You might not recall Larry, Laimbeer, Horry.   A lot of guy could shoot them if asked like McHale.   The game changes certainly.   I do think some bigs are more mobile but you still have dinosaurs out there today who can't move.

I would hate to be so lazy that I could not type the ea in Yeah.     Funny, is short on modern players but  this list will have Garnett soon.   Keep digging that hole, my friend, you only expose your lack of insight on basketball knowledge.

And I would hate to be so lazy that I never learned the difference between "your" and "you're", but calling someone out on that would seem to be poor form, I think.  :P
At least a goldfish with a Lincoln Log on its back goin' across your floor to your sock drawer has a miraculous connotation to it.

Yeah refs also had their own set of rules for MJ incase you are too young to remember. And by the way who were the elite wing players that MJ went up against in his prime!Reggie miller, John starks, Mitch richmond, Dominique wilkins post achilles injury!! The second best wing player during MJs prime was on his team (Pippen). The elite wings then were not comparable to the ones now.

Well your initial point was they were generally more skilled in the 80s. AM asking how could they be more skilled then than now when they only thing they have over this generation in terms of skill is post moves!! Are post moves the only skill in bball!!

Really not sure how posting 7 out-liners out of over a 1000 players proves your point ::)
