Just think he is a fantastic defender

I used to think that but he doesn't seem to be able to defend and play offense the same game.   It is like he puts his energy into one of the other.  But unable to do both at the same time.  As he has been asked to put more into offense, it seems he plays less D.  I think his D has been less this year than in the past.
Bradley hasn't been anything similar to a "fantastic defender" for seasons now. He's a one-trick pony defensively, and unfortunately his trick is pretty easy to deal with -- just set a pick. That's why it stopped working once it started popping on scouting reports.

He's still pretty good.

Pretty good at what?  He can't dribble, can't pass and can only shoot when given the ball in the perfect spot as he can't create his own offense.  He can defend, until screened, name one thing he can do much better than Smart?

A good but streaky shooter and a good to very good defender. (When he's screened, it's on the bigs to contain penetration which is something that the Celtics have been struggling with all year.)

I use to defend Bradley but his game has really regressed. He just seems slower and he barely ever dunks. So he basically has average quickness now, and plays below the rim. He also is not shooting the ball like he was last year. This could be due to a very good shooting coach leaving last year. I think it was Ron Adams.

Smart is a better shooter and AB hasn't been the same defensively in years, his effort is not there, Smart is better.  AB is the worst passing guard in the NBA and should not be starting for a NBA team, he has gotten worse over the last 2 years it seems and to give him that contract when they had the right to match any offer is ridiculous.
2019 historical draft.  Pick 12

Tim Duncan, Oscar Robertson, Elgin Baylor, Scottie Pippen, Willis Reed, Mitch Richmond, Sam Jones, Dan Majerle, Bob Cousy, Rasheed Wallace, Shawn Kemp, Marcus Camby

Bradley would be a second round pick in the draft coming up.

Due to no upside.

When Avery Bradley arrived on the scene and stole Ray Allen's starting spot, he was very very good at on ball defense and moving without the ball (some of those backdoor cuts he used to make were brilliant). He had the explosiveness and quickness and he seemed to have the fire that we C's fans love. I remember thinking, "man if he can extend his range a little bit and improve his handle to the point were he can dribble the ball without the fear of a turnover, he will be an above average shooting guard".

Well here we are. He has a decent jump shot and his handle has improved dramatically.

He should be very good, instead, he doesn't really play good D, he never cuts, he doesn't seem to care, and all he does do is take contested twos.

Maybe it is Jeff Green complex and he would be good as the 4th/5th option on the team, but because he is forced into a roll as a prominent scoring option his flaws are amplified?

who knows?

That being said I don't see his contract as an albatross. A slight overpay, but 8 million for a 5-7th man seems pretty reasonable.

It's only a bad contract if you can't move it. If we wanted to give away Bradley for free it would be trivial to do so.

That said, it is certainly disappointing that he hasn't improve at all this season.

Bradley is a better shooter, he has years to prove it. Smart is getting better, but he has to keep it up to convince me that he can be a consistent shooter. Bradley can start for some NBA teams with players that can mask his weakness.

The problem is that the Celtics only have a 65m dollar salary cap. 8m is roughly 12.5% of the cap.  Do we really want to spend that much of our cap money for a guy who doesn't project to be a bona fide starting 5 player?

What could we get in return for AB anyways?  Would we be able to recoup a 1st round pick in say the upcoming draft?

Bradley is WAY overpaid.  Hopefully we can send him somewhere.

Andre Dawkins is a much better shooter and could take Bradley and/or Thornton's minutes.

Shooting guards should be Young and Dawkins.

I'm just going to keep disagreeing that this is an accurate description of Bradley.
