  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
so we could have had waiters for nothing, is danny asleep or something

Yeah, I get that Waiters isn't necessarily the ideal pick-up, but he is a recent high lottery pick and is performing fairly well - the potential is definitely still there. Since we don't particularly have a direction, I would have been more than happy to have him in Boston.

So, the question we'll be hearing on CelticsBlog a lot over the next few days:  should Danny have taken Waiters if all it cost was a trade exception?
No.

This isn't even up for debate. The answer is yes.

Oklahoma City is sending a protected future first-round pick to the New York Knicks, league source tells Yahoo Sports.

Wojo

That makes more sense

While I'd have been willing to take Waiters for free, this is more than I'd have liked.  it also makes more sense for NY, since dumping Shumpert for straight up salary relief seemed unlikely.

OKC still needs to deal Jackson if they're not willing to pay him this summer, unless they think he's instrumental in helping them in the playoffs.

How about Nelson and the condition Philly pick for Jackson? Nelson is a good backup point guard for Westbrook, and he has playoff experience. Plus, those picks will likely be 31 (so basically a late first) the next two years.

Who says no?

Important thing to note: Post-deal Cleveland still has a need for a big man, still has it's $5.4 million trade exception, and now has an open roster spot.  Wright to Cleveland makes that much more sense.

Why does OKC need to trade him?  Why can't they keep him to be better this year, since he's better than Nelson and they're trying to win?

Just because someone might leave in free agency doesn't mean you have to trade him.

Absolutely.  I can't believe that this is even up for debate, and TheFlex - you and I like Waiters, so why wouldn't you have wanted Ainge to have gotten him for nothing, lol?  The bottom line is that we need talent - desperately, and Waiters is easily better than any other guard on our team.  At least he can create his own shot.  If I had been in Danny's shoes, I would have asked, "so where do I sign," lol? ;d

Meh, OKC sent a 1st so I guess this debate is over anyways.

Draft: 8 first rounders in next 5 years.

What pick do they have this year? It's something like a protected Memphis pick, right?

Jackson is a restricted free agent.  They'll probably look to do a sign-and-trade or to match and trade him in a year.

That's what I said in the first sentence. If they think he can make that much of a difference, then they should keep him. However with Waiters now and Westbrook going to be playing a ton of minutes in the playoffs, is he worth keeping the rest of this year knowing you're not going to be able to resign him?

Wright to Cavs for TPE could make sense, Wright hasn't entered tonight's game and isn't injured to my knowledge.
