Tonight Dirk passed Hakeem Olajuwon for 9th All time on the NBA scoring list. So I ask, again, one of the old age questions.

Dirk or KG?

You get to draft only one to start a franchise and you get their entire career. They will always be the most talented player on your team and focal point of the franchise. They will never have another teammate on their tier of player. They can have teammates obviously on lesser tiers and their teammates would be the same. Literally only difference is either KG or Dirk will be your franchise guy.

Both have been to countless all star games.
Both have been MVP once of the league.
Kg has been defensive player of the year while Dirk has been Finals MVP.

Who you taking?

KG's career has been cut short by injuries.

Without injuries probably, maybe, perhaps KG.

With injuries Dirk.

If Dirk wins one more, then it's Dirk. If not, KG. I always think that if KG was on the Mavs (you can say the Spurs too) all those years, I believe he would have won AT LEAST two rings, maybe more.

KG. He was an absolute monster early in his career. Just look at the teams he took to the playoffs in Minny. Just absolutely dominant on both sides of the ball. Not the scorer or shooter Dirk was, but the defense, rebounding, and intensity are unmatched.

Depends if you're talking about comparing their careers (including accolades) or if you're asking which one you want on your team in a redo.

I'd say KG would have benefited immensely from having better general management, as the above poster suggested. All those T-Wolves years were a sad waste.

But Dirk is looking like he could leave more of a legacy at this point.

Yeah, except that the year that Dirk won the MVP the Warriors not only beat the Mavericks, but swept them.  In the first round :o.  It's Garnett for me, hands down.  The only thing that Dirk does better is shoot 3 pointers, and he's way too much of a defensive liability, imo.  KG, on the other hand, is all about We, not Me, both in words and play.  The year he won the MVP, the Timberwolves made it to the WCF for the first time in team history, and they might have beaten the Lakers if Cassell wasn't hurt.  Sigh.  The guy completely changed the trajectory of the Celtics from day one, but I don't think that Dirk is that type of player.  Sorry.

Edit - Again, I forgot something.  KG has never blown a 2-0 series lead and missed one of two free throws with the chance to go up 3-0 over the Heat in the NBA Finals.  Yes, Wade was protected even more than Dirk (which is saying a lot lol), and I was happy for GP and Antoine, but Dirk choked, and not just in a game - in a series, where he lost the title on his home court.  Ouch.  He almost sounds like Lebron haha ;D.

The only thing that Dirk does better is shoot 3 pointers...

Maybe shoot in general would be closer to accurate. Or score. Either one is a better articulation that includes the free throw line and the midrange. KG has a very good midrange shot but Dirk can hit from anywhere including the paint and that is very valuable in today's NBA.

That said I'd choose KG. He was prolific early in his career and had Shaq not ended up on the Lakers during his prime KG would have probably carried the boulder that is the Minnesota Timberwolves to at least one ring. The fact that KG, in his day, could put up 80% of the offensive game Dirk could and then give you a maniacal defensive presence is the difference maker for me.

A better question might be KG or Shaq. If you look at the numbers it's closer than you might think.

I think it's easily KG. if KG played just about any where other than Minn. then he probably has more accolades, chances at championships, etc.

It looks like Dirk is going to a more healthy player long term. So I'll pick him.

I'm a huge Dirk fan but I'd take KG due to his defense.  Two points though- KG's career has NOT been cut short by injuries, and KG did more than his share of choking when he was in his prime on the Wolves.

Also, the Mavs being swept in Dirks's mvp year is irrelevant.  He was the most valuable regular season player that year.  That's what the award is...

I still think KG is a better overall player when both were in their primes.

KG has definitely melted down during his share of playoff games.

This is, actually, a really hard question. I think a lot of the other posters are right -- what does KG's career look like if he's got Mark Cuban behind him for his prime instead of the joke that was the Timberwolves front office? And do you use that version of KG or the one that actually happened?

I thought the age old question was KG or Duncan. I'll take him over Dirk though.
