Zeller is a legit 7 footer who can finish around the basket, exactly the type of big man who will thrive playing next to Rondo. He's going to become one of Rondo's favorite targets.
And if Lebron re-ups in Miami, that Cleveland pick could be a pretty decent pick.

Let me get this straight: we get Zeller + a first rounder for essentially absorbing Thornton for a year.

I was skeptical that such type of deal may be worth it, but this is really a royal ransom for our TPE. Wow.

That's one helluva move

A great, great added bonus to today's trade is that we may have helped sealed the deal for Lebron to go to Cleveland and have killed the Miami Heat, leaving Wade and Riley in misery.

I would have done the deal just for that alone.

but we also kind of paved the way for Love to go there too....

Love said he wouldn't resign there , but if they have Lebron he will
Careful what you wish for. I seem to remember everyone hating Cleveland well before they hated Miami ... And we are on the verge of a cavs dynasty that will last probably past Lebrons retirement.

Kyrie is 22
Love is 25

Those two alone are a couple of the best players at their position. Together they can he relevant for 10-15 years.  They are elite shooters.  Over the next 5 years that will be a more dominant big 3 than the one they had in Miami simply because of how elite their shooting is.   They will own the east for the foreseeable future.

The rumor was that Cleveland was offering a first for anyone who would take Jarrett Jack off their hands with no salary in return.  So, Ainge basically got a shorter contract in return and got Zeller added in the deal.

All three teams win if Cleveland makes good use of the cap space they freed up.

I gave the deal a "B," but not for any shortcoming on Ainge's part.  I think he did the absolute best he could possibly do given the circumstances, particularly with the TPE about to expire.

However, it's hard to give it an "A" when this doesn't really change anything.  This deal doesn't make the Celtics a playoff team and it doesn't really get them much closer to acquiring someone like Love.

Furthermore, while Thorton's expiring deal could be useful in a trade, there's a greater likelihood he goes the way of Kris Humphries and simply expires for us next summer.  While Tyler Zeller may prove to be a useful backup caliber center, there's a greater likelihood that he's a bust or a useful backup for someone else by the time we're relevant again.  And while there's a chance the pick brings value, there's a greater chance the pick is a bust.

Again, none of this is a knock on Danny.  He did absolutely the right thing in making this deal.  There certainly are no sure things in sports. And Danny took something that was about to have no value and gave it value.

I'm just not doing cartwheels around my house about it.

Zeller is 7' 1"! HALLELUJAH FOR THAT SIZE!
height is not the key here since he won't rebound with his head.

seller has short arms. only a 7' wingspan and 8' 8.5" standing reach.

for context, the average center in the nab has a wingspan of 7' 2.6" and a standing reach of 9' 1.3". That means zeller's standing reach is almost 5 inches shorter than the average center.

All of which means nothing because you rebound by getting position and being a quick, not high, leaper.  Few rebounds are actually taken above the rim.  Many of the best rebounders weren't the tallest guys or guys who had the best, or even good hops.  It is the guys who work for position and are quick to the ball that are great rebounders.   The Worm wasn't a big leaper, he wasn't especially tall, but he worked and was quick.  Same with Sully and Love.

How does Danny keep fleecing the nets?

Cleveland's first rounder, not NJ's. edit: Brooklyns.

I don't see why the Nets do this to help out the Cavs, though.

Exactly he's fleecing the Cavs here not the Nets.....  That's why he got the TPE, collecting assets...

The Cavs haven't been fleeced.  They get rid of Jack (who they didn't want) and they can now get LeBron.

TP. This blog loves the term fleeced! Someone always has to be fleeced in a trade.

Sometimes, it is just a good trade. Nice work Danny.

This is a very rare opportunity to use "serviceable," "legit," and "fleeced" all in the same post. You better believe that I'm ransacking the internet for a scouting report that compares Zeller's stride to that of a gazelle.

You get a TP as well.

I'm "cautiously optimistic" about this trade.  :)

Take that back.  You can't possibly be serious with a 'B' grade ?  Did you see what he just did ?  Better yet, do you understand what he just did ?

Great move by DA. Love it.

It fits the rebuild or it fits the try and get a star.

Gained another pick. A nice young big man, and a decent scorer who will be traded for more assets by the deadline.

The Cavs pick will be added to the KLove offer

One word... chemistry.  Unless Zeller, Jack, and that Russian guy were the ones making that team completely dysfunctional last year, there is still something wrong in that locker room.

Let's not forget, Irving still has a lot to prove in the nba and is a player who needs the ball in his hands a lot. How will that work with James? Also, there are no defenders in that lineup , and Varejao hadn't been the same player he used to be for years now .
