so does this mean we won't pursue guys like Isiah Thomas, Gordon Hayward and Lance Stephenson anymore? I mean, our guard rotation seems pretty much set.

What if the "fireworks" Wyc was talking was actually resigning Bradley, Humphries, and Bayless, and drafting Smart and Young?

Can confirm that the #Celtics & RFA Avery Bradley have agreed to a deal. Terms: 4-year-deal worth $32 million.

Wow.  I don't mind overpaying a bit for the short run since we aren't going after any marquee guys this year, but 4 years at that rate?  Seems way too steep.
actually, as i see it, the over pay is for the first 2 years. by the end of AB's contract $8,000,000/year for an above average guard with outstanding defense may be considered a bargain.

this does seem like an overpay, but not outrageously so. most folks here agree that $6,000,000/year is fair, meaning it is only (!) a $2,000,000 over pay. in and of itself, that doesn't prevent the celtics from doing anything dramatic.

the problem is when a team begins to accumulate these types of overpays. then their over all financial flexibility is seriously damaged.

over all, this is more than i thought AB would get, but nothing to lose sleep over.

Yeah, the increasing cap will help cushion it a lot.  But if $6M is "fair", $8M is a 33% hike on that!

As the sticker shock wears off, it's really not that unreasonable in context. I think we just all hope for bargains so a guy getting around the market rate seems like a huge overpay.

Then I guess we just have different opinions on what Green and bass are worth. I feel like Green is worth about 7 and Bass 5 or under. They're bench players.

What do you think about Luol Dengs contract?

Luol Deng is one of the better all around players at his position - he should get around $12-13m easily. Still doesn't make Jeff Green's worth it.

Yeah you guys and I will never see eye to eye I guess.

The Cavs really thrived last year with his skills huh?

So we're just ignoring all of the great, all star caliber seasons he had in Chicago and basing his worth on half of a season in Cleveland?

So did we thrive last year with Avery and Jeff? Because by that logic, they're definitely not worth the money.

Jodie Meeks just got nearly 7M a year for 3 years.  Lance is going to get 10+ a year for 4-5 years.

Current players making $7.5-$8.5M of note:

John Salmons
Brandon Jennings
Jeff Teague
OJ Mayo
Tyrus Thomas
George Hill
Marcus Thornton
Ryan Anderson
Omer Asik
Jeremy Lin
Rodney Stuckey

I firmly believe Avery Bradley is towards the top end of this list in terms of value (really only behind Teague and maybe Anderson and maybe Asik).  Seems like he got exactly what he deserves to me.

I'd peg him at George Hill in terms of value.  In other words, useful and likable but way overpaid and not a trade asset.

Perhaps, but I see a huge difference between Hill and Bradley.  Bradley has one ELITE skill, whereas Hill has none.  That has to be worth something additional.  If you have a player that is int he top 10 in anything meaningful in the NBA, there is going to be some team out there that needs it and will pay for it.

So the deal will end up looking like

1st year $7.2 million
2nd year $7.75 million
3rd year $8.3 million
4th year $8.85 million

That seems fairly reasonable if he stays healthy and continues to develop some.

Yep, that's basically what I came up with (some minor rounding differences).  Hopefully, though, the Celtics structured it to de-escalate over time, meaning it could potentially look like:

$9.01 million -> $8.33 million -> $7.66 million -> $6.98 million

Trust me, I love bargains too, but I think some people here don't realize they are asking for bargains from every player.

The players want to get paid and deserve to get paid, too.  Even non-All Stars.

Could this just be creating a trade chip? I mean like I said a few pages back Smart brings (or could bring) the same defense Bradley does, better playmaking, and better scoring. He has to be the long-term solution at one of the guard spots.

Give a solid role player like Bradley a contract to match salaries in a trade, and possibilities open up.

That's what I am hoping.

Otherwise, this signing is a massive fail.

no one will ever do that...don't you want a steady pay raise every year, and not a, you know...pay cut?

Either way - insert "re-signed Bradley for that much, signs that we are trading Rondo" comment

If I start see those threads pop up, I'm taking a break from CBlog until training camp starts

Wow, overpaying for n injury prone undersized guard that doesn't rebound, pass or handle the ball well for his position. I wanted to keep Avery, but 6 million was a fair offer IMO. He got his contract, I hope to see a great deal of improvement in other areas besides shooting.

Couldn't you have also described Ray Allen like this during his career? With the exception Ray was 6'5 Avery 6'2, not saying Avery is Ray...but
