Mascherano very good performance. Shielding defense well. Looking comfortable and secure on the ball. Keeping possession well.

It's a shame he doesn't get to play in midfield anymore since joining Barcelona. He looks a lot more comfortable on the ball here today than he did a few years ago. Looks like he has improved on the ball but just hasn't been able so show it Barca cause he is played as defender.

Finally, Greece's presence at this World Cup is a total embarrassment. It's an absolute mystery how they managed to win Euro 2004. Their stodgy, slow, defensive play is looking worse every tournament as their key players get older and weaker.
That's is completely disingenuous. As a Greek American I find their performance disappointing but there's several factors that play into how and why they play like that. It's not because of 2004. 2004's team was the pinnacle of Greek Football talent. It was a perfect storm situation for them the players, the coach, and form. Will never happen again. But it was a great story and refreshing to see a team that wasn't one of the European super powers to win it for once. But that was 2004.

This Greek team is limited in its midfield options. What they produce in defensive players, the midfield situation is the complete opposite to the point they have to rely on a converted RB as a DM, a 38 year old Karagounis, and a 34 year old Katsouranis (who played as a CB this year for his club team) as key cogs in their midfield. They just don't have the talent there and the talent they do have is not ready or not player because the coach, Fernando Santos, is a moron and refuses to change things up. Fortunately, he's gone after the tournament. Unfortunately, they are here now and have to make due with what they have: decent goalkeeping, a good backline, a horrendous midfield, and no healthy strikers. That being said, Santos totally effed up the opener at the Euro in Poland and was forced to change on the fly. Hopefully that will be the case again.

This team can't afford to fall behind. They are not built to do that. The Columbia game illustrated that. Columbia got a fortuitous bounce and went up 6 mins into the game. The Gekas later on header just broke their spirit. It would have been 1-1. How the hell you miss from 4 yards out is beyond me but they were broken after that.  I still give them a fighting chance to get a result against Japan and Ivory Coast.

But as someone else mentioned, you play with what you got. Greece will always be a defend first and score second nation.

All I can say is.

BENZEMA!

I'm starting to really, really like him as a player. I hope Arsenal buys him soon.

Arsene Wenger has said that he won't buy Benzema now because he doesn't want Benzema and Giroud to compete for #9 spot at both club and country. Says it is unhealthy for the players. Bad for Arsenal (team spirit).

They they should sell Giroud.  ;D

Edit:

They are also linked to two Mario's, Mandzukic and Balloteli. Arent they both "#9" as well? I dont get it. He doesnt want Benzema to compete for the striker spot with Giroud, but is interested in getting top flight strikers in the process.

You aren't really disagreeing with me there. I never blamed Greece's ineptitude at World Cups on them winning Euro 2004, which is one of the great triumphs of team play and determination over talent. However, they are in a relatively easy group and should be pressing the issue more. I can think of at least 3 or 4 teams worse than Greece in this tournament and none of them have shown the lack of imagination that Greece have, except possibly Honduras who seem determined to kick the opposition off the pitch.

You mention Greece can't afford to fall behind, yet you keep doing so, playing the same system. Time for a change in outlook, and definitely a change in manager.

Mascherano has probably become so postionally efficient because Barcelona are playing him at CB.

If Mangala is worth ?35-40 million, why doesn't he start for France?

Porto knows how to sell extremely high.  I wouldn`t be surprise if they ger even more

Yup.

It's like he was saying to Muller, "how dare you try to get me in trouble?  Look, I'll show you, I can get in way more trouble all by myself."

Dumb.

Yep Yep, putting on a clinic.

Pepe = what an idiot.

My thoughts exactly...

Also, for all the talk about bad officiating, the referee is doing an excellent job.

Except for the fact that 2004 wasn't the first time Rehhagel took a no-name team all the way to the title.

In the summer of 2017, I predicted this team would not win a championship for the next 10 years.

3 down, 7 to go.

Thomas Mueller, 24, winner of the 2010 best young player award, winner of the 2010 golden boot, 8 goals in 7 WC matches.

Cristiano Ronaldo, least amount of touches of all players who played the whole 90 minutes.

Can't wait to read the headlines in the english press talking about "german efficiency ruthlessly marching on" without any star players.  ;D

Pepe suspended, Coentrao injured, whoever wins USA - Ghana seems to have a good chance of making it past the group stage.

USA!

I just got back and saw the Dempsey highlight. Heck yeah!!!

I feel bad for Landon Donovan, he probably really wants to be in Brazil.
