One thing to consider is that Rondo has accumulated a reputation with locals of being a bit of a jerk. I have spoken with numerous people over the last few years who ran into Rondo around the area and all of them complained about how much of a jerk he was. I can't say anything about him either way as I never met him, but everyone that has met him seems to hate him.

Not just the locals, but Jason Jackson (Heat sideline reporter) has gone on the LeBatard a few times and called Rondo the biggest jerk he's ever met. Talked about an incident where Rondo walked right through him as he didn't even exist. Said that when he spoke to the Boston media guys they just said "that's how he is".

yea, I mean, just one example out of the many I heard from people I know who met him, my cousin literally sat next to him at the airport for 2 hours waiting to board a flight, with very few people around. My cousin told Rondo, " hey Rondo! Your the ****ing man! It's great to meet you! Rondo looked up at him, said absolutely nothing, and turned his head. So my cousin figures the guy doesn't want to be disturbed, and he takes out his iPhone to browse the web and leave Rondo alone. Rondo turns to him with an angry look and says "hey, no photos or videos!" My cousin just told him "I'm browsing the ****ing web dude, cool down". That was it. Rondo sat there in silence for the rest of the time. A few kids came by to say hello when they recognized him and he ignored them.

Another story I heard from a few people is that he went to a popular night spot in Lowell, reportedly with a group of guys one of which was Josh Smith. He acted like a jerk to everyone around and mouthed off to enough people that the owner asked him to leave.

I agree, some of the best players ever were jerks, outside of the game. The biggest jerk I met as far as celebrities go was Bobby Orr, and I still love him as a player, his greatness is undisputed. When we are talking about which players would be more popular and why though, being a jerk to your fans and the media does factor in big time.

Again, my explanation isn't something I really want to get into right now... but there's a reason for why Kevin Love has national ad campaigns with Taco Bell and Pepsi despite playing in the dregs of Minnesota and having never made a playoff appearance.

   Traded players sometimes get big bumps in jersey sales, other than that I wouldn't count on a big bump in popularity from moving to Boston. Paul Pierce never made the top 5 in jersey sales and I don't think he ever  got voted in as a starter in an all-star.

Don't underestimate the effect of being a jerk to the sports media, and the power of social media nowadays.  Bird and Kobe were good with the media, especially Kobe. It does matter when you are talking about popularity. It doesn't matter when you are talking about how good a player is though. I would still take the jerk who can dominate over the nice guy who comes in second on the court anytime.
