  • I'm a Paul Heyman guy.
i picked Dario Saric because I think his skill level is right there with the best of them, but the more I read about Aaron Gordon, and the more I watch his DraftExpress video package, I'm loving him more and more.

I think he's going to be a 6'9" Andre Igoudala. He's not the guy who you should build around, but I think he's going to be one of those ULTIMATE glue guys that will do everything else on the court.

I want that.

As Yoki said Gordon looks like a great "glue guy". Based on his smarts and work ethic I have a lot of confidence that he will continue to improve, add facets to his game.
Would be a real safe pick.
OTOH, Saric could turn out to be one of the best players in the draft, he could also fall on his face. I'd love to draft him on potential to be a fame changer but IMO he is a less safe pick.
Given that Gordon already possesses an NBA ready skill (defense) and has a good chance of further development taking him as a safe pick could end up being a home run.
Saric is a swing for the fences pick and could end up as a warning track fly ball.
Head says Gordon, heart would be psyched with either.
So... Gordon.

The fact that there are so many opinions on who to draft says a lot about this draft.  Maybe there is no Duncan or Lebron, but I can't remember a draft that could produce so many good/solid players at 5 through 15.  Of course I would prefer a top 4 pick, but there are about 7 guys that we could take at 6 that I could be on board with.

I'd take Smart.  But I think Ainge picks Saric.

Saric is a high risk, high reward draft pick.  Ainge loves to take those risks.  Since you can't scout Saric with the rest of the NCAA players, who knows if he's better than all the rest.  Ainge likes to roll the dice and I believe he does it with Saric and his game.

Also the fact that Saric hasn't been linked to Ainge recently, I think is a bit of a reveal. Maybe he trades down.

I'd take Smart.
But my thoughts on this may change as I learn more about the various players over the next month.

I would like Smart/Vonleh.

Those two look very intriguing, and if Smart can play like a slower but stronger hybrid mix of Harden/Wade. I see absolutely no issue with that.

Its better to be an aggressive player, especially if Smart can use his bulk to get easy free throws.

Interesting that you chose those two because they seem like the polar opposites regarding their personalities.

Smart = fiery
Vonleh = sleepy

I chose those two based on 3 things.

1) Personality. I don't get why everyone think Vonleh is uninterested. He just seems like a shy type of guy, and GOOD coaches can create or develop them. Kawhi Leonard is a perfect example of a quiet but budding superstar.

2) Potential. Vonleh has the best wingspan, and knows how to rebound, a very underrated stat. Marcus could literally be anything.

3) How they performed in their respective games.

Gordon, the most athletic, good bball iq, good defense, great motor, great work ethic, nice humble kid.
IMO he is great to START building something.
I think he is Ainge's pick

Just hoping Utah doesn't take him.

If we draft Vonleh, what do we do with Sully?

I could get on board with Marcus Smart there.  Would be an interesting look next to Rondo, and could be a real emotional leader and crunch time focal point for the team if Rondo ends up getting traded.
There'd definitely be no mistaking them for the Splash Brothers.  I'm not high on Smart myself.  I don't think he has great PG skills, and I don't think he shoots well enough to play the 2.  I also don't think his bully ball style will translate well to be more physical NBA.  I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up an energy bringing, defending backup combo guard.  I'd definitely pass on him at six.

Rondo and Smart together would be the nastiest, most fiery backcourt in the NBA. Could be a really unique intangible advantage- the kind of thing that wins playoff series. I like Bradley and think we have bigger needs at C and SF, but I wouldn't be upset with Smart at 6. He's got that winner mentality.

bigger needs at SF? People are that over critical of jeff green it is laughable. there are very few trades i would actually want to do in regards to Jeff.

I like Jeff Green. If anything, he's almost too valuable for a contender and far into his prime to keep around unless we plan on contending very soon.

Maybe trade down a handful of spots and pick up a 3rd 1st rounder in the mid 20's? Nab 3 players total . .. and acquire a big time shooter, a tall athletic wing and a Euro big man?

If we stay at 6, I have a feeling Aaron Gordon is Danny's guy. I have no idea how he fits into this roster, but that's not the point. DA will want the guy with the unique athletic talent, rebounding and lock down defender capability, with intelligence and room to improve on the offensive end. He could rotate with Jeff & Crash at the 3 and with Sully & Kelly at the 4.

This works if some of the players are stashed overseas. Otherwise, you end up with the possibility that 3 players are looking for contracts in 2018. This makes sense if Danny wanted to say, pick up either Saric at #9 or Porzingis later on.
