I could get on board with Marcus Smart there. Would be an interesting look next to Rondo, and could be a real emotional leader and crunch time focal point for the team if Rondo ends up getting traded.
There'd definitely be no mistaking them for the Splash Brothers. I'm not high on Smart myself. I don't think he has great PG skills, and I don't think he shoots well enough to play the 2. I also don't think his bully ball style will translate well to be more physical NBA. I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up an energy bringing, defending backup combo guard. I'd definitely pass on him at six.
Why? Sounds a lot like Dwyane Wade youre describing there...
No great PG skills - check
Poor jumper - check
Physical style of play - check
Hmm...
Personally I like Vonleh as the first choice and Smart as the backup solution.
To me there is just no question here. Vonleh has the physical gifts, the skill level, the potential (only 18), the positive attitude, and he fills an immediate need with his ability to score and defend in the post. That's my pick.
As a second pick I will go with smart because he's really the only other guy outside the top 5 who is a two-way player, and so even if he never becomes a star he will at least be a very good starter who can score and defend..
Plus he's tough, and even though he's not an elite athlete he has the size and strength to make him a handful for a lot of NBA guards to deal with.
After the guys is a rough call...Gordon or Randle?
Gordon can really defend, but he'll be a non-factor offensively against NBA talent. Randle could become a capable scorer and rebounder in the NBA, but his poor defense and unspectacular jumper hold him back. I'll probably go randle because I think he has more potential to become a star (Zach Randolf/Carlos Boozer style) while I really think Gordon will max out as a really good defensivw role player in the mould of Gerald Walace. I think scoring is more need in Boston, since we already have a good defensive SF in Jeff Green.
