I'm curious as to how many CB posters would be willing to make a trade for Kevin Love, but wouldn't make the exact same trade for DeMarcus Cousins, and if any of them could defend that position.
Interesting.
We know pretty well that Cousins isn't the offensive player that Love is. Love has the outside game, is the better free throw shooter, and has similar numbers in the paint.
Defensively, neither has a good reputation and both have been thought of as outright bad at times.
Both are great rebounders, but Love rebounds more on the offensive and defensive glass.
Cousins is humungous, and humungous players tend to have broad impact that is hard to measure. Unfortunately, the Kings are a terrible team, so it's hard to play that card in Cousins' case.
Cousins has been healthy while Love has had some injuries, so there's some reason to favor Cousins there. It's [dang]ing, though, that the Kings are always terrible, whereas the Wolves have been a pretty good team when Love is healthy and a pretty bad team otherwise.
A year ago I would have said that Cousins is toxic and can't be expected to consistently play hard or set a good example for his teammates. This year, he had this KG-like us-versus-them thing going on, and otherwise he's just been keeping his head down and playing his best basketball. Rumor has it that proprietary defensive metrics even like him on D now.
Take all that into consideration and I think there is a solid case for betting the farm on Love but taking a pass on Cousins. It is interesting, though, for sure.
