I'm at work, so I don't have my spreadsheet at work that tracks this, but we have a little under a million wiggle room.  If the C's actually want him, they can offer him more than the minimum, since they have most of the MLE left.  I'm not a huge Jimmer fan, but our team stinks, so it can't hurt.  It might even be a win-win -- if he's good, then we get a cheap pickup.  If he's not (and he may not be, considering he wasn't good enough for Sacramento), he'll help out tankfest a bit more.

We are $772 148 under the tax at the moment so we could sign him. I am not sure Jimmer wants be to a part of another rebuilding team.

My guess is he goes to a contender/playoff team. Actually I think he already has a deal in place, similar to Big Baby, that's why he asked to be bought out.

That would be tampering if he did.  No offense to Jimmer, but he's not worth the trouble to tamper with.

I think he'll go to whichever team will give him the most playing time.  If he's signing a rest of the season contract, he'll want the chance to show off for his next contract.

I am not sure he has shown enough to get much interest from a contender.  My guess is he will go to a team that will use him a bit more effectively, so he can showcase himself the last couple of months.

Boston would be a fit.  Maybe the Lakers.

Tampering? Come on man, that kind of stuff happens all the time in the NBA. Agents working behind the closed doors, no one can prove anything.

You think Big Baby's agent didn't know Clips and several other teams were interested in him if he got the buy out?

Edit:  From Yahoo article: ... they now have three available roster spots and are reportedly in contention to pick up Glen "Big Baby" Davis. Davis played for coach Doc Rivers with the Boston Celtics. "I have a hunch," Rivers said. "But until everything's done, I have no idea."

He has a hunch they will get him :)

I'm surprised they were unable to trade him before the deadline.

If Sacto is willing to buy him out now, and basically eat his remaining salary, does that mean that no one was willing to trade a 2nd rounder or even cash for Jimmer before the deadline? Or was Sacto asking for too much in return?

SL, any estimates as to how much of the MLE Boston still has?

If the Celtics do have roughly $750K of room, they could offer a prorated deal with a decent second year attached.

I think Boston would be a better place for him to (re)establish himself. On a playoff team, I doubt he gets more than spot minutes.

As Chris said, the Lakers could be a fit too. Milwaukee? Utah?

According to ShamSport Boston had $2,659,820 of his non-taxpayer MLE left before using a small part of it to sign Chris Johnson.

So it's a little over 2M left IMO.

I bet Utah is going to go after him hard.

With his BYU history and all, that's instant ticket sales. The kid can shoot, it's just a matter of putting him in the right situation.

That's where I got too. We're around 1.5 million under the taxline, a pro-rated deal with a second year attached or even a third non-guaranteed year seems ideal.

We used about $2.5 million of the MLE on Faverani and Pressey, leaving us with about $2.65 million.  However, beginning in January (the 10th I think), the value of the MLE starts to prorate down on a daily basis.  Still I'm sure we have more available with the MLE than we do the luxury tax.  The advantage we'd have, if we want it, is that we'll be able to offer more than the minimum.

I don't see the Lakers spending any luxury tax dollars on Fredette.  They're also not likely to sign him to a multi-year deal, since they want to keep salary clear for next season.  I don't see him ending there at all.  Maybe Utah, to get fans in the seats.  Milwaukee would have the same reason to sign him as we do.  Same with Philly.

But I expect Jimmer to end with one of the lottery teams like us, and not one of playoff teams, since he'll want playing time more than being at the end of the bench of a winning time at this point in his career.

EDIT: Forgot about Chris Johnson, who cost us a couple hundred K of the MLE.  Still, as I and other posters have said, the key constraint is the luxury tax, and not the MLE.

After reading that Grantland article about the Rio Grande Vipers, I think the Rockets will probably give Fredette a call.

good lord.  will the fascination for Adam Morrison 2.0 never end?  kid had a great college career that isn't translating to the pro game.  just move on.

he's on his rookie deal and being bought out.  he couldn't be traded for a hill of beans.  he has an exremely limited skill set that requires better players on the floor with him to utilize that skillset.  that ought to be a clue that this kid isn't going to worth even the vet min to look at him.

Yeah, he won't get picked up.  He's only shooting 49 % from 3 & 47 % from the field, playing for one of the most garbage organizations in the league.  Who, by the way, still don't know what direction to go in.

No playoff team could use him off the bench as a shooter.

Is he better than both of our backup point guards ?  I think so.
