i don't think anyone can really celebrate here. Those who wanted us to trade vets (Rondo, Green, Bass) for young assets/picks should be pretty disappointed.
Those who wanted us to upgrade the roster should be a bit disappointed... we just wasted Humph's 12 mil expiring, Bogans 5 mil expiring and the Paul Pierce trade exception. Seems those assets will expire with nothing in return.
I'm rather surprised we did nothing. But we could still possibly get a bigtime pick this year and keeping Rondo certainly isn't something to be sad about.
I can celebrate. Ainge did what I wanted him to do: avoid giving anyone away for pennies on the dollar. There is no urgency to do a deal unless it brings back more value than is sent out.
Nothing has been wasted. Humphries contract was unlikely to be traded unless a big contract guy was coming back. Bogans is not an expiring contract, he is an unguaranteed contract who can be used during the off-season. The trade exception was unlikely to be used until the short window between the end of the July moratorium and when it expires due to the Celtics being close to the luxury tax and hard-capped due to acquiring Bogans via sign-and-trade.
I would have been happy with Bass/Bogans/1st for Asik, but I wouldn't want to overpay for Asik.
Right now, I'd like Ainge to consider offering buyouts to Humphries and Bayless and think about taking a flyer on some D-League talent, then sit tight and wait until the off-season for opportunities to add talent to Rondo.
