If Danny trades a pick in this year's draft to get Asik, I'm going to lose a LOT of faith in him.

Celtics, Rockets still haggling over which future  first-round pick goes to Houston in Asik deal, sources tell Yahoo.
Sounds bizzarre, given that they're all pretty much the same pick, something in the 15-20 range.

Yeah, I don't get the hesitation and haggling over what will amount to late teen, early twenty range picks.
Well, there _is_ an odd chance that we'll bomb from the playoffs and then our pick will be a bit higher, but I still don't see a way for the best pick that we own to be a top 10 pick. And if we're not drafting in the top ten, getting Asik is likely better than any and all picks we'll make this season.

I think Ainge should hold out and make sure it's not a '14 pick. It doesn't sound like there are a lot of other suitors and this draft is deep compared to your average year. How about next year's Clippers pick?

I'm surprised by Zach Lowe's analysis:

Quote
That potential BOS/HOU trade is...a little bit of a yawner, maybe? Not sure it moves the needle much for either team.

Quote
Would give HOU a bit more versatility/insurance against injury (and a pick, perhaps). Not quite sure why BOS is super-interested.
Surprised by it too.  But not everyone is sold on Asik.  On paper he's a total stiff.  Yeah, he had a good season rebounding, but he wasn't even in the top 100 for defensive rating or the top 40 for blocked shots.  You have to look at some deep "points allowed on/off court" breakdowns to really back up the idea he's an "elite" defender... and even then there are reasons to be skeptical, because those "points allowed on/off court" stats could just mean Asik's backup was a garbage defender.   That and the fact he's a terrible offensive player.

Not for nothing, but you've used those on/off numbers to show the impact KG made on defense for the Celts.
Yup.  I'm sold now timmy.  Let's trade for Asik.  I think he can get us to 41 wins.

Curious though... all the talk about Asik's on/off impact on defense.  Did the offense score more/less points with Asik on/off the court?
Did the Bulls ever have a guy like Rondo that will feed him the ball though? He's good for 10 pts easily just playing with Rondo not really worried about his offense

Yeah, but which other one do you trade if the Rockets refuse the Clipper pick?  Brooklyn could be a shambles in 2-4 years, and if our rebuild takes too long our picks could be valuable too.

Maybe offer Brooklyn's 2016 pick, lottery-protected, which rolls into our 2017 swap rights pick, also protected, and an unprotected Boston pick in 2018?

The report says *future* draft pick.  My guess is that the Rockets are asking for one of the future Nets picks (2016 / 2018).

I like Asik, but it seems like we'll need to resign him to be able to contend with him.  Given the market rate for bigs these days, and Danny's reluctance to pay them, And Bass and Lee were both justifying their contracts this year.
I'm not sure how this plays out long-term.

...unless Danny's plan is to showcase Asik and flip him at the deadline to a contender...

I'm sorry, could you repeat that? I couldn't hear over all the whining and moaning around us.

Seems like a healthy mix of people who think it's a steal and people who think we're getting robbed.  Should make for some fun "analysis" of Mr Asik in the coming months.

No kidding.

If the going price of unloading Wallace's contract is multiple 1st rounders, then shedding the second longest contract in Lee and converting Bass into a starting caliber center who's reputation around the league is for rebounding and defense is worth a single 1st rounder, no?

Well, 2014 technically in the future, as well.

Disagree. There's a lot of talent at the top of the draft (Exum, Parker, Wiggins, Randle, etc) but I don't think it's significantly deeper than in previous years.

Yeah, but it's kind of redundant to specify "future" if he meant a possible pick in this draft.

Especially on twitter, where it's all about being pithy.  :P

I agree, I was just being facetious :P

I'm sure they want a future Brooklyn pick, and Ainge is offering a future Celtics pick. It's also worth noting that the Clips pick is also a future one (2015).

which pick would you want to give up?  Clippers pick next year?  Are you comfortable giving up the Clippers unprotected 2015 pick?  With how deep the West is, all it would take is a Chris Paul injury for that to be a lotto pick.

Almost best just giving up one of our picks this year since they are basically worthless at this point.  We're picking #19 and #20.  Get them to agree to take the worst of those two picks just in case the Eastern Conference has a miraculous turn-around and we fall out of the playoffs.

well, this is the interesting point, isnt it? we may see the draft picks as virtually the same. but ainge may think one of them is far more valuable due to a range of reasons, some of which MAY (talking out my butt here folks) be:

- ainge plans another trade using a particular pick.
- ainge believes there IS a big difference and doesnt want to lose that edge.
- ainge may simply be bargaining to get the best deal, and would ultimately surrender either one, but why do so without a fight?
- maybe ainge is negotiating to get something else in addition to asik.
- the picks are NOT in 2014, but a nets pick. that would make a big difference depending on the year.

i dont know exactly, but i do trust that ainge is going to get the most he can for the assets he has.

lots of us here at CB predicted that these assets would be important to ainge. but ainge is turning out to be quicker than i thought it seems.
