Gay and Cousins on the same team.

There's a joke there somewhere.

Probably not one you ought to tell.

And somewhere Larry Sanders felt sad.

  • I'm a Paul Heyman guy.
I think it's a solid deal for Sacramento.

Gay is inefficient, and his shot selection, whew. We all know that. We also know he can drop 20 at any night, rebound the ball and play solid defense. He's a very bad 1st option, but probably a very good 2nd. Sacramento wants to be good right away, and while Gay would not put them up there, it's a solid start. They now have a very athletic and actually talented core. It's just a matter of Gay being efficient now.

On Toronto's side, I can't be more impressed. Getting salary relief and a backup plan in Vasquez in case Lowry walks. Ujiri is cleaning a very messy house, and he's doing a really great job.

I think Gay and Cousins could actually play pretty well together.

Why?

Both have the tendency to settle for bad shots. And Cousins doesn't react well when he doesn't get the ball when he wants it. Rudy is another guy who has to "get his", so yeah.....

Perhaps playing Gay at the 4 will encourage him to take more shots inside and not play on the perimeter so much.

Perhaps playing with a scoring force like Cousins will allow Rudy to feel like he can defer a bit more and not try to be the #1 option all the time.

Or perhaps, at least, being matched up against big men will give him more open jumpshots and help increase his shooting efficiency.

What the Kings really need is a passer who can get Gay and Cousins the ball in good spots.  A really good pick and roll guy.  It would be interesting to see that team with Rondo at the point, but I don't know if they have the assets, unless they're willing to part with their 1st round pick this season and McLemore.

Are they playing Gay at the 4? I was assuming they'd play him at the 3 and give Williams more run.

I'm skeptical on the being matched up against bigs will help his shot. His eFG% in catch and shoot situations is just 49%. He's just not a very good catch and shoot guy and that's not an easy thing to adjust to for a young player midseason.

His pull up jump shot isn't actually that bad. He has an eFG% of 43% That's comparable to Ty Lawson, Paul George, etc. (btw Jordan Crawford leads the league in eFG on pull ups, among those who take more than 4 per game)

Its just that he doesn't catch and shoot much at all, and when he does he doesn't make them at the crazy rate that good shooters do.

I thought I read somewhere that they are planning on using Gay and Williams interchangeably at the forward spots, which means Gay will spend at least a significant amount of time playing at the 4, at least nominally.

The report was that they'd play both at forward and use them interchangeably. Not sure if that means both as stretch 4s or what.

It means Sacramento is just throwing things against the wall and seeing what sticks.
