Contrary to some of the chatter out there, Hayward was not seeking the four-year max worth in excess of $60 million from Utah during the past month-plus of negotiations, but I'm convinced that's a legit possibility for him in the summer when he becomes a restricted free agent. You'll recall that it's not too far in the past that Eric Gordon landed a four-year max offer sheet in restricted free agency from Phoenix amid serious questions about his knees. The Suns and Boston Celtics -- just to name two franchises known to be big Hayward admirers with Jeff Hornacek and Brad Stevens running their respective benches -- are among those projected to have the cap space to put an uncomfortable offer on the table. Utah, of course, will have plenty of its own cap space to match a max offer if necessary, but doing a deal with Derrick Favors when Hayward might be an even bigger part of Utah’s future ... struck me as curious to say the least.

The Celtics would seemingly have to do an awful lot of trimming this season to put themselves in position to be offering max deals this offseason. That said, they do have that $10.3 million trade exception in their back pocket for potential sign-and-trade possibilities. Regardless, the Stevens-Hayward connection will leave Celtics fans dreaming of a Butler reunion in Boston.

This year, Kevin Love came in first, with 24.1 percent of the vote. Marc Gasol came in second; Matt Bonner and Jared Dudley tied for third, and J.J. Barea rounded out the top five. It wouldn't take that much trimming.  The Warriors gave up two firsts and two seconds to get rid of the contracts of Biedrins, Jefferson, and Rush.  That was a combined $24 million over one year.

If the Celtics make no mid-season deals, Ainge should be able to salary-dump Bass and Lee (a combined $18 million over two seasons) for no more than a first-round pick each, clearing enough cap space to sign a player with 0-6 years of NBA experience to a max contract (or coming pretty close).  That would effectively be trading Bass, Lee, and two firsts for a big contract guy.

Hayward isn't on that list. But let's compare his predraft measurements to Gerald Green, a similar sized player who is considered a freak athlete and a guy we're quite familiar with.

Who really cares about athleticism? Production is what matters.

The max-level deal the Pacers gave Paul George, selected one spot after Hayward in the 2010 draft, hovered over the Hayward extension talks. The two players have roughly equivalent per-minute statistics, and Hayward has been the superior 3-point shooter. Utah fans love to make the comparison, whining that the world has overlooked Hayward while deifying George, and Hayward's agent would have been dumb not to trot out the same stats — and to point out that George has worked with a much better veteran surrounding cast.

But the argument doesn't quite pass muster, mostly because the per-minute numbers ignore a thing called "defense" that comprises half of every NBA game. Hayward has been uneven as a defender, both one-on-one and within Utah's team rotations. George is already among the dozen or so best defenders in the game. His wingspan is almost four inches longer than Hayward's — a big difference — and Hayward this season must prove he can defend bigger wings consistently.

Not sure the 10.3M trade exception will bring in Hayward, but it could possibly bring in a pretty darn good star-caliber player.
