I like Hayward, but I'd be very uncomfortable giving him more than $10mill per.

I just don't think he'll ever be a "star". I put him in the same class as Jeff Green. Maybe a tick above Jeff.

I really like Hayward but im not sure he is a max contract guy

Hayward is not even close to a max contract guy.  If any team so much as contemplates offering him a max contract their GM should be fired on the spot.

I don't think Andre Iguodala is on a max contract, and I would take him over Hayward in a heartbeat - even considering the age difference.

Gordon Hayward certainly makes the most of his limited athletic ability.

You think he has limited athletic ability? I think he is very athletic actually.

This year, Kevin Love came in first, with 24.1 percent of the vote. Marc Gasol came in second; Matt Bonner and Jared Dudley tied for third, and J.J. Barea rounded out the top five. In a league where nearly four of five players are black, four of these five guys—Love, Gasol, Bonner, and Barea—are white. (Dudley's biracial.)

 ;D

That is hilarious.

And the fact that a couple people mentioned Hayward when  he's a strong athlete about says it all.

A mid- to small-market team that generally doesn't serve as a big FA destination may have to offer Hayward a max contract in order to land him.

I'm guessing that Phoenix will offer Hayward an Asik-style front-loaded contract that Utah will find extremely onerous to match.

Who really cares about athleticism? Production is what matters.

http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/9928311/the-murky-waters-restricted-free-agency-their-way-2014

Quote
The max-level deal the Pacers gave Paul George, selected one spot after Hayward in the 2010 draft, hovered over the Hayward extension talks. The two players have roughly equivalent per-minute statistics, and Hayward has been the superior 3-point shooter. Utah fans love to make the comparison, whining that the world has overlooked Hayward while deifying George, and Hayward's agent would have been dumb not to trot out the same stats — and to point out that George has worked with a much better veteran surrounding cast.

But the argument doesn't quite pass muster, mostly because the per-minute numbers ignore a thing called "defense" that comprises half of every NBA game. Hayward has been uneven as a defender, both one-on-one and within Utah's team rotations. George is already among the dozen or so best defenders in the game. His wingspan is almost four inches longer than Hayward's — a big difference — and Hayward this season must prove he can defend bigger wings consistently.

Two kind of connected points:

1. Something tells me Hayward would spend more time at the 2 if he came to the Celtics. Maybe it's because Ainge doesn't have much confidence in Bradley. I dunno, just a hunch. But if this is the case, his defense will become better solely due to size mismatches.
2. I'm more concerned by the rebounding discrepancy between George and Hayward. Defense is mostly effort, and Gordon certainly puts in the effort, so his defense doesn't worry me. Gordon's rebounding has been better so far this season, but that's a small sample size. If he were to play at the 2, I suppose his rebounds would matter less.

I can see an argument being made for him getting the max because George did. Doesn't mean I'm comfortable with it, though.

Bledsoe, Hayward, Len, and four rookies from the class of 2014 also sounds good.

Utah will have Hayward's full Bird rights.  That poison pill gambit works against teams that only have a player's early Bird rights.  Utah also has little in the way of future salary commitments, so you are not threatening them with a huge luxury tax bill.

Interesting, I did not know that. TP. I'd also mistakenly thought that Kanter was heading into RFA territory, but that's not the case either.

So, I guess Phoenix won't be able to put much pressure on Utah after all, even with a max-contract offer. Utah can simply match, or use a fifth year to offer more total money at lesser per-year costs (provided they don't want to save the 5th year contract option for Kanter or someone else).

I not too familiar with the restricted free agency but can Hayward choose the offers from other teams or he automatically goes to the highest bidder if Utah doesn't match?

If Utah matches, he stays. (Eric Gordon didn't want New Orleans to match Phoenix's big offer to him when he was a RFA, but they did anyways, so he had to stay put.)

If anyone else tenders him an offer sheet, he has the right of refusal, I believe.

Thanks. I hope we sign him he seems like a good 3rd option on a contender.

I feel similar and am not a fan of the other part of Hayward's game that doesn't get brought up that much, his defense. An earlier post had a quote saying his defense was uneven. Let's call it what it is. His defense is not good.

Also, if we are getting Haywood, for the love of God Danny, find a way to get some of the other 4-5 SGs off the roster.

Is this Hayward stuff actually based on anything or is it just the coach-player connection?  That seems to be about it from what I just read.

Yeah, I've never heard anything about Ainge liking Hayward.

[Although, league rules probably discourage Ainge from saying much about Hayward. Plus, Ainge is pretty cagey.]
