If he was a legit FA instead of a RFA the coach-player connection would mean something to me.  At this point it doesn't mean much.

Gordon signed an offer sheet with Phoenix.  New Orleans matched. 

That's how a restricted free agency works (for those wondering earlier in the thread).  A restricted free agent can sign an offer sheet with the team of his choice.  The offer sheet is a proposed contract that the new team can legally sign the player to under CBA rules.  The old team has a few days to decide on whether or not they want to match it.  If the old team matches, the offer sheet becomes a contract with the old team.  If the old team declines to match, it becomes a contract with the new team.

If making sure he came here meant paying him the max.... not loving that idea at all unless he shows some improvement this year.  But it'd be like 9 million for his years in the league right?  It's not terrible.

Yes I'm aware.  Which means probably overpaying him, which I'm not interested in doing.

If he was a FA he could maybe come here for a discount or less than other teams were offering at least if he really wanted to play for Stevens.

EDIT: I guess the issue is I really haven't seen enough of Hayward to say either way.  I definitely haven't seen enough of his defense, which some say is so terrible.

Yeah, if you look at a majority of their stats, they're not too far apart.

The major thing I like about Hayward is that he can play the 2 and I think we'll have the hardest time finding a legit player for that position.  3s are practically falling from the sky.  It would be nice to have someone who could play defense at a high level, though

Yes, we trade Rondo, but the return is good. Hayward is 23 and Burke is 20. Plus, adding Utah's 1st would give us 2 lottery picks in the 1st rd. In addition, we get rid of Lee's deal.

absolutley no chance of us getting a lottery pick in the 2014 draft, a top young PG prospect, and Hayward for just Rondo and Lee.
