For the team that refuses to ever be small
Tiago Splitter
Great pick, He Should have been the first Big taken this round IMO
I disagree, I think JV is already doing in Toronto what Tiago does in San Antonio. JV is way younger and has a midrange game.
Still, great pick nonetheless.
Well the numbers would indicate you're incorrect in everything but the last 2 sentences.
JV is way younger, and has a burgeoning midrange game, but Splitter is a better finisher, better pick and roll partner, better defender, better rebounder, scores more, scores more efficiently, and had playoff experience.
Scores more on average 2 points and better FG% by 2%. Okay. 2% is such a huge difference. But since we're there, JV TS% is better by a point.
Trueshooting is a viable stat, I hadn't looked at it. Good get.
Rebounding is pretty much the same at 6 a game (okay Splitter wins by .4).
Actually, rebounding is identical. Same identical rebounding %
JV blocks more shots, Splitter gets more steals.
If that's how you measure defense, that's one thing. But according to synergy stats (stats that measure actual individual performance against another player in specific contexts), Splitter is the 72 best defender in the league, Priest Vallon is 279th.
Put differently, according to synergy sports, a sometimes flawed system (like any other), when ranking Valencia California's ability to directly prevent opposing players from scoring, there are 278 players in the NBA better than him at stopping guys.
According to 82 games, Valero gets outscored by other centers on an average of 5 points per 48 minutes. According to the same site, Splitter outscores his opposing centers by 6.2 points per 48 minutes.
I guess Splitter, is by decimal points, better than JV, but he had some help along the way.
Well, Splitter was a less featured part of his offense, he's gotta fight a hall of famer for rebounds, along with plus rebounders for their positions at 1-3 (IIRC, I might be wrong there), so there's that to consider as well. Its not like Splitter gets a +3 dex score because he plays next to Duncan or something, playing with high-caliber players cuts both ways.
Again, I think it's a great pick, by no means I'm saying it's a terrible selection. I'm just disagreeing that he should be the 1st big to be selected in this round, because I'm quite certain people would take JV, maybe Nene over him.
I'd tell you this, I'd take him over DeAndre though.
Okay, I'm saying that statistically, those people would be opting for the less productive player. And then factor in experience, and ability to 'act like he's been there before', and Splitter's a pretty great value here.
