This intentionally tanking idea is utter garbage and does not interest me at all.
Cleveland drafted LeBron, but he won a title with Miami.
Toronto drafted Bosh, he won a title with Miami
Lakers couldn't win a title with just Kobe, they needed Shaq and Gasol...both of whom came in trades and never won title with their original teams.
Chris Paul was drafted by the Hornets, if he wins a title it will be with the Clippers.
Pierce won his title in Boston where he was drafted, but they were a garbage lottery team until Danny swung a big deal to get Ray and KG over, while also masterfully drafting Rondo.
OKC have been one of the best success stories in this regard with Durant, Westbrook, Green and Harden. Green and Harden have since moved on, while Durant and Westbrook still don't have a ring.
When Detroit got Wallace and Billups in trades
Indiana were great last year and a big part of that was David West, who they got in a trade. They did well drafting Hibbert and George, but where's that ring?
Chicago drafted Derek Rose, no ring.
Portland drafted Greg Oden, Brandon Roy...where are they now?
About the ony team I can think of in recent history who genuinely won a title with great drafting as San Antonio, and that's it.
See the problem with this concept is that the only way a team typically gets a high lottery pick is by either:
a) trading way a very good player or
b) sucking royally
usually iit's the latter. Now when a team sucks THAT bad, simply adding a future hall of fame calibre draft pick won't change that. How long did it take the bulls to become good once they got Jordan? Or the Knicks when they got Ewing? Ir the rockets when they got Hakeem?
The only way that happens is if you get two insane draft successes very quickly (e.g.Shaq and Penny).
The next problem is because you are a crap team, no free agent wants to sign with you, no matter what crash hot rookie you just drafted...so you tend to suck for years while you draft multiple future stars (hopefully) and or gradually convince fr agents that you are a place worth coming. OKC sucked for years before they saw this success, so did the bulls after Jordan left.
Because nobody wants to play for a crappy team what usually happens is two or three seasons later this superstar rookie gets sick of losing on a crappy team, gets offered a contract by a good team that has the potential to actually win some games, then walks.
Sure that star will probably end up contending at one point, but with another team.
No thanks.
Haha you've just used examples to support your own terrible argument which has no basis in reality.
*Lebron took the Cavs to the NBA finals
*Dwight Howard took the Magic to the NBA finals
*Jordan took the Bulls to the NBA finals
*Durant was drafted by the Thunder, took them to the finals.
*Shaq took the magic to the finals
*as did Duncan
*as did Larry Bird
*KG took the Timberwolves to the WCF where they faced the Lakers with Kobe and Shaq
*Nowitzki took the Mavs
*Wade took the Heat with the help of Shaq.
Shaq and Gasol both joined Kobe. You're acting like the rings don't come without those two but ignoring the fact they had Kobe there to add those pieces to. Same with the Celtics and Pierce. He's still a franchise guy that took the C's to the ECF but didn't have the support cast to go all the way until Ainge came along.
Look what happened once the Rockets drafted Hakeem. And the Bulls drafted Jordan. And the Magic drafted Shaq. And the Cavs drafted Lebron.
If Roy and Oden don't BOTH go down, is it arguable that the Blazers at least make the NBA finals or WCF as a contender? Same with Rose? Injuries are a part of the game. You can get a lottery pick or an NBA superstar but if they get injured it's out of your control.
Roses's Bulls team at full strength is something Miami has seen once when Rose was a 2nd year player.
No one is arguing that you can win a title just with the franchise draftee but it's a MASSIVE part of championship teams.
Like I said, go back and name me some teams other than Detroit that won a title without their own lottery pick.
The only one is Kobe with the Lakers and he refused to play for the Hornets after being picked 14th as a European high schooler- he has played for them since day one so yeah, he is their lottery pick in a sense.
*Chris Bosh is a good player, not a franchise guy
*Chris Paul is a good player, maybe a franchise guy.
Their teams could never put the right cast around them and they weren't good enough to carry a mediocre team to the finals like Lebron and Howard or KG to the WCF and Pierce to the ECF.
Your argument has zero basis in historical evidence of championship winning teams.
