I'm going to resist the temptation of categorizing Olynyk after one summer league game.  Yes, his floor is JJJ and his ceiling is Dirk/Duncan.  Isn't that the case for every rookie big who can shoot?

As a businessman, my floor is Antoine Walker and my ceiling is Warren Buffett.  Does that tell you anything about me?

It tells me you've probably said "...because there aren't any 401(k)'s."
At least a goldfish with a Lincoln Log on its back goin' across your floor to your sock drawer has a miraculous connotation to it.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
He plays nothing like Duncan.  I think his ceiling is more Nowitzki.  Has the range to shoot the 3 ball, but I don't think he can shoot as far as Dirk.  He also has a nice post game that is only going to get better.

Dirk isn't super athletic either imo, but the height advantage allows him to get off jumpshots that are nearly unblockable.  So if Olynyk turns into a poor man's Dirk, I think I'd be satisfied with that. 18ppg instead of 25ppg as a stretch 4 would be pretty darn valuable for us.

TP - these are my thoughts as well. I realize that he most likely won't be the next Dirk, but he kind of has the same potential...and I would gladly take those 18 ppg on what appears to be pretty efficient shooting. Kelly can create his own shot, which is pretty admirable for a 7 footer.

I wasn't initially crazy about the pick, but it makes a lot of sense. I am a little over project big men - this guy is hardly a project and is super polished offensively.

5 steals today.

He has PG skills. Can't find a comparison really.

He's 3-6 from the 3 so far in summer league.

I feel neither Dirk nor Timmy is what he'll eventually become in the NBA. As much as i hate comparisons, he reminds me more of a Chris Kaman or Spencer Hawes

I am going to withhold judgment until he plays against an actual NBA caliber center or power forward. I like his offensive game, but not sure he gets off some of is inside shots against real NBA talent. Bring on pre-season games.  ;D

Just to clarify. It's clear his offensive game is different from Duncan's. The similarities for me is that there both Big Fundamentals that know how to play. And they both had late growth spurts that led to there amazing skill for seven footers.

Just a reminder of what Dirk look like at his debut in summer league 1999.
Nothing tremendous but you can tell a lot about his shooting motion already for a guy that tall.

Thanks, LGC88, for posting that. It's interesting to watch and compare.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to say that any nickname starting with "The Big... " sucks. Come on. The Big KO... you might as well do lazy baseball nickname thing and call him Kel-O, or K-Oly or some garbage.

O-clinic is awesome.

The Big anything is completely terrible. Yes, that includes the big ticket. Sorry but it's true.

I've heard the nickname Olynyk the Clinic chatted a few times during Zags games. Love it

Btw the comparisons of Dirks highlights you posted and Olynyk in his first 3 games are eerily similar

I like the Klynyk.  I'm crediting Yogi with that one.  I don't know if he came up with it, but he was the first person I saw post it.

I saw the Clinic in Zag games too.  I just changed the spelling for fun.

I love Jeff Green's "sunshine."

I am referring to him as O-clinic from now on, hopefully that sticks.  If someone could make me a sweet Sig for that I'd appreciate it
