We are over the cap so we could just send 2nd rounders.  We would need to match salary.  That is the advantage that Portland had.  This is not something that the Celtics could have done.

Prior to waiving T-Will this morning, I believe that a poster did the math and that T-Will, along with all the other non-guaranteed contracts, would make a trade for T-Rob work. Houston could then proceed to waive the players they get and free up cap space.

To relate this to Boston's concerns, I think this effectively puts an end to the Aldridge talks. The Blazers have a phenomenal young nucleus, and IMO one of the most dangerous foundations in the league.

That is correct.  However, it's possible that this deal with Portland is contingent on Howard agreeing with Houston, which would have caused some problems with the partial guarantee of Williams' salary.

True.

But Kris Joseph's salary + DJ White + Shav Randolph should have worked. Perhaps Houston didn't want to wait for the Nets megatrade, even if it is slated to go through only two days later.

Still have the same problem that plagued them last year--no real bench to speak of. Portland had Pacers-itus last year, a solid starting 5 and no one to pick up relief minutes.

"So, in addition to all the great points we've made already, we've cleared cap space so we can sign you as soon as you want. You're that important to us."

"You're not even on our team yet so we're not going to gamble with trading away T-Rob to clear cap space. However, if you tell us you're 100% signing with us, then we'll move him."

Which one makes Dwight more wanted? I don't think they made this trade because they knew they're going to get Howard. They made this trade to further better their chances of landing him.

1. Kris Joseph cannot be combined with other players in a trade.

2.  The two European players traded are actual assets.  They are very productive and can play in the NBA at some point.

3.  Thomas Robinson is a reasonably efficient role-player.  He's not a very good defender and a terrible offensive player.  His strong point is rebounding.  Houston had a huge hole at power forward and they barely played him.

I absolutely agree. That's why I specifically said foundation rather than team. I think McCollum is going to mold into a fine young sixth man for them. Robinson and Withey are promising young bigs to have off your bench. However, they won't be enough, as they need some more experience off their bench, as well as a starting center. Regardless, the future is looking bright in Portland.

McCollum will play minutes at both guards spots. Is JJ hickson still in Portland or is he out? if so then he can play mins at the 4 and 5 as well. They have Eric Maynor at the PG position as well. All they need as a decent pack up SF. Its not a horrendous list at all. All extremerly young. if they can keep the core 8-9 players together for 3-4 years its gonna be a perennial playoff team imo

Maynor is a free agent and Portland has already expressed they won't be bringing him back. They seem pretty confident in McCollum.

Hickson is a solid center, but he's undersized and I think Portland has their eyes on making a bigger splash. They've been tied with Gortat, Jordan, and Pekovic already.

Houston could be folded into the megatrade quite easily as a third team.

Good. Didn't want to hear any more of this "Bring TRob to Boston" nonsense.

This. Both Papanikolau and Todorovic could have better NBA careers than Robinson.

And Sully is clearly better than him, too. We'll see what we have in Olynyk, but I wouldn't be surprised if Robinson is moved again this season.
