Rondo, Bradley, Green, Sully:  I'm rooting for those guys, and against everybody who wants to see the Celtics tank for the 2014 draft, including Danny Ainge, if that is indeed his plan.

I don't really care if I'm the only one.  If that team makes the playoffs, for me, it will be almost as special as winning a title in 2008.

Basketball is still a competitive sport, and I'm rooting for my team to be competitive.

That would almost be as special as winning the title in 2008?

That maaaaaybe a little bit of an exagerration

why trade rondo, at his lowest value, if he doesnt have to play next year?

I kind of agree... he'd basically be playing the role of Pierce on the 2007 Celtics.   Tank, get a top pick, bring back Rondo healthy.

But... Rondo is a bit of a headcase.  He doesn't have KG, Ray, Pierce and Doc to reel him in anymore.  He might come back semi-healthy, under-perform while playing for a tanking team and demand a trade... which would put us in a very awkward position.  So maybe you jump at a trade now before he kills his trade value even more.

Someone might want to gamble on the "playoff superstar rondo" myth... before his warts get exposed surrounded by nobodies.

so...

approx .500 record, the 8th seed and swept out of the first round = biggest turnaround in NBA history, Pierce outdueling Lebron in a gm7 classic, largest comeback in history against the Lakers, beating the Lakers in the Finals, "anything is possible" and Banner 17

um, no.

true but then why rush the trade for rondo? the only thing i can think of is danny ainge fearing rondo demanding a trade, therefore removing some of DA's leverage

they had a guy on weei talk about trading rondo might be a good idea since he doesn't attract free agents.  he only has a few good relationships around the league.

You guys must have missed the part where I wrote, "I don't really care if I'm the only one."

So, yeah, not to be rude, but I don't care what the rest of you are rooting for.  I'm rooting for my Celtics to win basketball games led by what I expect to be a really fired up point guard.

why trade rondo, at his lowest value, if he doesnt have to play next year?

the two reasons that come to mind for me:

1) his contract -- if a team feels they have a full 2 years to work with him -- even if he's working his way back from injury -- they're more likely to give up meaningful assets. by next summer, he's a rental. this is the same reason i suspect POR will get more serious about shopping Aldridge.

2) his 'tude -- he's a pill. some will call it toughness, others that he's a female dog. but basically if he doesn't want to be here, they may want to start fresh in that locker room as fast as possible, especially if they don't see his value increasing over time.

Or he might come back with an even bigger chip on his shoulder than the one he's been carrying around for his entire career.  He might continue to go out and prove everybody wrong like he's done every single year since he's been a pro.

I'm hoping for my scenario.  You go ahead and root for the negative one.

This is simple.

With Rondo were a perennial mediocre team. Which is what we want.

Without Rondo, were a ping pong ball bounce away from getting some legit talent on this team.

I really like Rondo, but I am in the camp of being ready to trade him. I would love to get a couple lottery level picks or a Demarcus Cousins type for him.

By the time the Celtics could be back on the contention map in 5 years, Rondo will be past his prime.

I also have strong reservations of paying Rondo the max. He has had the potential to get 15 a night on a consistent basis, but he never got to that point. If you are starting a team from scratch, I don't feel good about paying max money to a moody guard who cant give you a consistent 15 points per game during the season.

But... if you can't get a great return on a trade I would keep Rondo, and be prepared to let him walk if he can get another team to pay him the max as a free agent. He is still a heck of a dynamic player, and worth watching for the duration of his contract.

Couldnt have said it better myself. Especially with reason #1. No one wants a 1 year rental (except LA). I could see him going to ATL if they fail with Dwight in a trade that looks like this:

Bos Receives:
Schroeder
2014/2015 1ST pick (Top 3 protected)

ATL Receives:
RR

Starting to be convinced to just go ahead and move Rondo now.  I'm sure Ainge is just testing the waters right now and seeing what he can get but if we can move Rondo and Wallace and get a solid young player in return and a 2014 1st then that's hard to say no to.

Given where we currently stand I think we are going to have to trade Rondo.

With him we are going to be too good to get deep into the lottery, even if we hold him out for half the season. I'm not normally in favor of tanking, but given what the FO has done it's pretty clear that's what Danny has decided to go for and we need to go all out if we are going to do it.

We hold him out to start the season and then let him come back and hopefully show he is healthy and then move him at the deadline for whatever we can. I think we should be able to get solid value once he has come back and shown the knee is healthy.

That way we get the benefit of being terrible without Rondo for the start of the season and then we can move him for picks/young assets at the end of the season and still be bad enough to have a pretty solid chance of getting lucky in the draft.
